Interesting facts
"Von Buhl" Riesling Brut is an elegant white sparkling wine made from biodynamically grown Riesling grapes. The harvest is pressed in whole clusters. The must is then fermented in stainless steel tanks and partially in old oak barrels. After secondary fermentation, the wine is aged on the lees for 18 months and at least 3 months after disgorgement. At the Reichsrat von Buhl winery, the sparkling wine is given time to balance flavor nuances and ensure harmonious development of the carbon dioxide structure. "Von Buhl" Riesling Brut possesses all the qualities of traditional sparkling wines from Pfalz — puritanical purity, freshness, precision, and crisp minerality. After the hot and dry 2018 year, and the winter of 2019 with little precipitation, the grapevines faced a significant water deficit at the beginning of the growing season. An unusually cool May slowed vine development, while July with its high temperatures further exacerbated the situation. In many vineyards, the grapes suffered from sunburn. However, by early autumn, it became clear that despite the challenging weather conditions, the quality of the grapes had not suffered. The harvest was quick, as the phenolic ripeness of the grapes was already optimal. The year 2019 gifted aromatic, balanced wines with a beautiful acid structure.
About the Manufacturer
Since its founding in 1849, the Reichsrat von Buhl winery has been producing wines from the noble grape variety Riesling, grown on one of the best vineyards — Forster. Franz Peter Buhl, the founder of the estate, was able to produce exquisite wines that gained international recognition in a short time. Thus, in 1869, the wine from Reichsrat von Buhl was the official wine of the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal. Otto von Bismarck was also a great admirer of Buhl's wines. Franz's grandson, Eberhard, was the founder and president of the Association of German Winemakers, who sought to maintain the high quality of German wines. After his death in 1921, his widow Frieda Piper von Buhl took the reins. Under her leadership, the high quality of the wines was not only maintained but improved. After the death of the childless Frieda in 1952, according to Eberhard's will, the winery passed into the ownership of his political friend Georg Enoch von und zu Guttenberg. From 1989 to 2013, the estate was leased to Japanese businessman Toyohiro Tokuoka. Since 2013, a new, ambitious company led by managing director Richard Groche, technical director Matthieu Kaufmann, and manager Werner Sebastian has resumed the production of exquisite German wines using organic technologies.
