Interesting facts
The origin of "Mateus" wine dates back to 1942, when the founder of the company, Fernando Van Zeller Guedes, had the idea of creating a wine with a distinctly individual character and unique taste, presented in an original innovative packaging. The bottle was designed to resemble a soldier`s flask from World War I. The combination of the bottle`s originality and the wine`s quality ensured its success for many years. Today, the brand is represented in over 125 countries, and more than 1 billion bottles have been sold over its 60-year existence. "Mateus" Rose is made from a blend of Portuguese red grape varieties: Baga, Rufete, Tinta Barocca, and Touriga Francesa. The wine is produced using a traditional method for white wines. Slow fermentation of the grapes without skins takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 16°C. After cold stabilization, the wine is filtered and bottled. The entire process is carried out with utmost care to ensure that "Mateus Rose" has a unique style, color, and freshness.
About the Manufacturer
In 1942, Fernando Van Zeller Guedes and partners founded the company "Sociedade Comercial dos Grandes Vinhos de Mesa de Portugal", now known as "SOGRAPE Vinhos". The company`s mission was to create products based on three criteria: wine quality, brand importance, and active presentation of its wines. The first released drink that met all criteria was "Mateus" wine, which brought fame to the company and spurred further production development and entry into the markets of Argentina and Spain, and shortly thereafter — the United Kingdom and the USA. Under Fernando Guedes` leadership, a new factory was built in Avintes in 1967. This marked a transition to a new level of volume and quality. Six modern bottling lines provided a capacity of 200,000 bottles per day. In the 1970s, "SOGRAPE" expanded its investment portfolio through other strategic areas, including the glass industry and banking. After a global restructuring in the 1980s, the company "Sogrape" focused on creating new wines and covering new wine regions of Portugal — Dão, Vinho Verde, Bairrada, Douro, and Alentejo. Significant funds were invested in research for selecting and planting quality Portuguese grape varieties, as well as in building modern winemaking facilities. Guedes also began actively supporting university research in biotechnology, viticulture, and winemaking. Today, the company is managed by the third generation of the Guedes family. It owns about 1200 hectares of vineyards in the main Portuguese wine regions, as well as in Argentina, Chile, and New Zealand. The production base of "SOGRAPE" includes 9 estates and 10 wineries, with a capacity of over 30 million liters per year.
