Interesting facts
"Carnasciale" is the second wine from the estate of Bettina and Moritz Rogoski. It is crafted from the harvest of young vines of a unique grape variety — Caberlo. This unique and mysterious clone of grape was discovered four decades ago in an abandoned vineyard near Padua. The clone was named Caberlo because the grape possesses characteristics of both Cabernet and Merlot. This rare variety is grown only in one place, on the vineyard of Il Carnasciale, located on the rocky southern bank of the Tuscan Arno River. The wine "Carnasciale" has been produced at the estate since 2000 and during this period has gained high acclaim from critics and brought fame to its owners far beyond the country's borders. The founder of the winery, Bettina Moritz, is rightly called the "Queen of Tuscan Wines," and the wine "Carnasciale" is one of the jewels in her crown. The 2017 vintage will be at its peak maturity from 2020 to 2030. Decanting is recommended half an hour before serving.
About the Manufacturer
The Podere Il Carnasciale winery is located in the southern part of the Chianti mountains, in the Valdarno area, near Siena and Arezzo, sixty kilometers south of Florence. This small estate was created by Wolf and Bettina Rogoski. Today it is managed by Bettina and her son Moritz, in collaboration with enologist Peter Schilling. In 1985, after severe frosts devastated the magnificent olive groves of the Rogoski family, Wolf decided to cultivate a rare clone of grape — Caberlo, which is a natural hybrid of Cabernet and Merlot. Thus, in 1986, the first vineyard of the estate was established, occupying only 0.3 hectares of rocky soil on a slope where olive trees had been grown for over a hundred years. In 1999 and 2004, two additional plots were planted. As a result, the total area of vineyards reached 2.1 hectares. Today, the Caberlo grape is grown only at this estate. Work in the vineyards is done manually, with minimal intervention, without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and all sanitary procedures are natural. Podere Il Carnasciale produces only two wines — the unique, magnificent "Il Caberlo," which is bottled only in "magnum" bottles of 1.5 liters (no more than 3300 magnums per year) and the second wine "Carnasciale," which is a fine example of a "younger brother" crafted with the same care as the main wine.
