The fragrant aroma of the wine is filled with rich berry tones, silky and layered hints of dates, cocoa, spices, black currants, black olives, pomegranate, and smoke.
The taste of the wine is full, excellently structured and balanced, juicy, with intense notes of ripe black fruits and grainy tannins. In the persistent, fresh finish, notes of currant, dark cherry, and spices are preserved.
The wine pairs beautifully with meat dishes, especially with spiced ribs, braised veal chops, tuna steak with a black pepper crust. Interesting facts
The story of Cask 23 wine began in 1974. The founder of the winery, Warren Winiarski, and the famous winemaker André Tchelistcheff tasted numerous new wines from the 1974 vintage and noticed one wine from Stag's Leap Cellars that captivated them with its taste. They decided that this wine should be bottled separately. The wine was named Cask 23, after the large wooden barrel in which it was aged. Today, the wine is made only in the best years and is one of the most respected collectible wines in the world. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for Cask 23 are harvested from specific blocks and sub-blocks, from which small batches of exceptional quality berries are selected. Each batch is vinified and aged for 21 months in small new French oak barrels. At a later stage of aging, the winemakers created the final blend.
About the Manufacturer
The Polish surname of the founder of Stag's Leap Cellars, Warren Winiarski, translates to 'son of the winemaker.' However, Warren did not plan to become a winemaker. He was interested in the humanities and studied at the University of Chicago. But fate had other plans. In 1964, Warren and his wife Barbara moved to California, joining a new wave of pioneers arriving in the valley. For the next few years, Warren gained practical experience in winemaking, first as an apprentice to Lee Stewart at Souverain Cellars, and then as an assistant at the newly established Robert Mondavi Winery. After his training, Warren Winiarski began searching for land capable of producing grapes for wines of classic proportions and balance, and in 1970 his search was successful. Two years later, Winiarski purchased a nearby winery. Thus, Stag's Leap Cellars was born. Now, the vibrant and harmonious wines of Stag's Leap Cellars, despite the youth of the winery, have gained popularity worldwide. The vineyards are located on diverse soils, allowing for the production of wines with individual and unique characters.
