Interesting facts

Cabernet Sauvignon for the "Fay" wine is primarily grown on the lower and middle sections of the Fay vineyard. The berries from these terroirs enrich the wine with classic notes of red fruits and strong aromatic hints. A small amount (less than 10%) of grapes from the eastern part of Fay gives the wine a powerful taste. The wine was aged for 19 months in French oak barrels.

About the Manufacturer

The Fay land attracted the founder of "Stag's Leap Wine Cellars" Warren Winiarski back in 1969 when he tasted Nathan Fay's homemade Cabernet, 1968. Warren instantly realized he had found what he was looking for — a combination of classic fruity elements and structure, flexibility, and balance. Soon after, Winiarski acquired adjacent lands and planted vineyards now known as "Stag's Leap Wine Cellars". In 1986, Nathan sold his vineyard to the Winiarski family, and in his honor, the vineyard was named Fay. The vineyard consists of two parts. The part located on the eastern slope on volcanic soils, closer to Palisades, yields grapes with good structure. The grapes grown on the western alluvial rise are filled with rich aromas. When they are blended, a classic style of wine is achieved, which Winiarski called "an iron fist in a velvet glove". The Polish surname of the founder of "Stag's Leap Cellars" — Warren Winiarski — translates to "son of a winemaker". But Warren never planned to become a winemaker. He was interested in the humanities and studied at the University of Chicago. But fate had other plans. In 1964, Warren and his wife Barbara moved to California, joining a new wave of pioneers arriving in the valley. For the next few years, Warren gained practical experience in winemaking, first as an apprentice to Lee Stewart at Souverain cellars, and then as an assistant at the newly established Robert Mondavi winery. After his training, Warren Winiarski began searching for lands capable of producing grapes for wines of classic proportions and balance, and in 1970 his search was successful. Two years later, Winiarski bought a nearby winery. Thus, "Stag's Leap Cellars" was born. Today, the vibrant and harmonious wines of Stag's Leap Cellars, despite the youth of the winery, have gained popularity worldwide. The vineyards are located on diverse soils, allowing for the production of wines with individual and unique characters.
