Interesting facts

"Georges de Latour" Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017 is an incredibly balanced, long-lasting, and focused, refined and complex wine that, according to wine critic James Suckling, resembles classic old vintages from the 1960s and 1970s. The "Georges de Latour" Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has been widely recognized as the benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford since its first vintage in 1936. A special role in the creation of the wine was played by the winemakers' understanding of the terroir, based on over 100 years of experience in crafting rich, classic wines from Napa Valley. "Our heritage honors the combination of the most modern technologies and gentle, traditional winemaking methods, a combination that enhances the expression of our remarkable vineyards," explains Beaulieu Vineyard. The confident 2017 vintage, according to critic Joshua Greene, "may well be a historic vintage for Beaulieu; this wine is worth buying for your cellar," as years of enjoyment lie ahead for all who own it.

About the Manufacturer

"Few wineries have played such an important role in the history of American wines as Beaulieu Vineyard," wrote Kelly A. White in her book "Napa Valley Then and Now". The winemaking heritage of Beaulieu Vineyard has remained unchanged for over a century. Its history as one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in Napa Valley is written thanks to a remarkable location and outstanding people who shaped winemaking in America. The estate was founded by Georges de Latour and his wife Fernande in 1900. Georges de Latour's knowledge of phylloxera, which devastated many vineyards in Napa Valley, and his decision to import pest-resistant rootstocks helped him secure his status as one of the first pioneers of the California wine industry. When Prohibition began in the United States in 1920, most wineries in the country were forced to close. However, Beaulieu Vineyard secured a contract to supply sacramental wine to churches across the country. The demand for such wine during Prohibition surged, and the winery expanded several times. By the time Prohibition was repealed in 1933, production had grown to over 3,800,000 liters per year. After Prohibition was repealed, the winery hired André Tchelistcheff from France as winemaker, and the quality of its wines significantly improved. Tchelistcheff also mentored other important winemakers such as Mike Grgich, Joe Heitz, and Robert Mondavi. By the 1940s, Beaulieu wines were served at all major White House events. When André Tchelistcheff joined Beaulieu Vineyard in 1938, he tasted the family's personal wine — the "Private Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon of the 1936 vintage. This wine was so distinctive that Tchelistcheff insisted it be bottled and sold as the flagship offering of the winery. Today, this wine has become iconic. In the mid-1940s, Beaulieu was owned by the Marquis de Penne, whose wife was a member of the French winemaking family de Latour. Currently, the main shareholder of Beaulieu Vineyard is Treasury Wine Estates.
