Interesting facts
"Silex" is the most mineral, powerful, and long-lived wine of Benjamin Dagueneau. It is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown on a biodynamic vineyard on limestone soil with a high content of silex — a type of silica (hence the name "Silex"), on the slopes of Saint-Andelain. The age of the vines ranges from 35 to 65 years. The combination of terroir characteristics, vine quality, and vinification specifics allows Didier Dagueneau to create the most structured, intellectual Pouilly-Fumé. This is confirmed by Dagueneau`s view that Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most complex and delicate grape varieties, and wines made from it can be as noble as white Burgundies made from Chardonnay. Fermentation and aging of "Silex" take place in French oak barrels (20% new), including the famous Dagueneau cigar-shaped barrels. In 2017, Louis-Benjamin removed all his wines from the Pouilly-Fumé designation, preferring to label them under the Vin de France classification due to ongoing disputes with local authorities. "Silex" — always taut and "nervous" in its youth — has the ability to improve in bottles over decades. Decanting is recommended before consumption. The spring of 2019 in the Loire Valley was cool and dry. April frosts damaged some vineyards. The cold weather slightly slowed vine growth, but then hot and dry summer followed. Harvesting in many parts of the Loire began in September, and the surviving grapes after the drought were rich and concentrated. Overall, it was a good year that yielded a harvest of excellent quality.
About the Manufacturer
Didier Dagueneau, the founder of the famous winery located in Pouilly-Fumé, was called a rebel during his lifetime. He was nothing like a winemaker — disheveled hair, a bushy beard, a powerful physique, and a passion for motorcycle racing. After surviving two accidents, Dagueneau decided to pursue winemaking. The Dagueneau family had been involved in winemaking for generations, but Didier, wanting to prove his ability to produce better wines than his relatives, deliberately chose not to collaborate with his family. Today, critics recognize him as one of the best winemakers in the world, who produced wines from Sauvignon Blanc. In his memorable and original wines, he achieved stunning depth and finesse. In September 2008, Didier Dagueneau`s life was tragically cut short when he was involved in a plane crash. The wines released before 2008 have become true legends, benchmarks for the best wines of the Loire Valley. Currently, wines under the "Didier Dagueneau" label are produced by his son Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau and daughter Charlotte.
