Interesting facts
Meursault is the center of four communes — Meursault, Blagny, Chassagne, and Puligny. This part of Côte de Beaune is called "Côte de Blanc" due to the predominance of white grape varieties. The vineyards where Chardonnay for Meursault is grown are the most extensive in Côte de Beaune. They are located on gentle slopes, at an altitude of 230 to 360 meters above sea level. The eastern orientation of the slopes provides maximum sunlight. Chalky soils of white marl are excellent for Chardonnay grapes. The unique features of the terroir find a logical reflection in the taste and aroma of the wine. The harvest is conducted manually when the berries reach optimal ripeness, and the grapes are transported to the winery in small boxes to preserve the integrity of the fruits. The grapes are then subjected to gentle pressing, after which they are fermented in oak barrels, one-third of which are new. The wine is aged on fine lees for about 15 months. Foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement the classic 228-liter barrels, which is a further evolution adapting to warmer harvests. The year 2022 marked the second year of organic conversion for Domaine Louis Jadot. In good temperature and humidity conditions, Meursault can be stored for 5 to 15 years. The 2022 vintage promises to be unique, reflecting the complex climatic conditions of the season. The winter of 2022 was dry, with mild periods alternating with colder ones. In the second half of March, almost summer weather set in, but in early April, there was a sudden cold snap and several frosty nights from April 3 to 10. As a result, some early plots were affected, but without significant damage. Light rains accelerated the cycle, and flowering occurred in the second decade of May, promising even ripeness for future bunches. Summer recorded at least four heatwaves, but the vines resisted admirably and showed no signs of stress. Finally, several storm rains passed along the coast and truly changed the atmosphere. Harvesting began on August 30. This season produced wines with bright character, rich flavor, and aroma.
About the Manufacturer
Louis-Henri Denis Jadot founded the Louis Jadot house in 1859. However, the history of this house dates back to 1826 when the Jadot family purchased vineyards — Clos de Ursul, Bon Premier Cru. The negociant house under the management of Louis Jadot quickly expanded with a focus on the markets of Northern Europe — a territory well known to Louis, as his family came from Belgium. His son, Louis Jean-Baptiste, took over the reins of the company in 1900 and began expanding the business by purchasing numerous vineyards, including Corton-Charlemagne and Chevalier-Montrachet Le Demoiselle. The next generation under the leadership of Louis-Auguste Jadot began developing new export markets, mainly in England and the USA, with the help of Rudy Kopf, founder of Kobrand Corporation. In 1954, André Gage joined the company as deputy to Louis-Auguste Jadot, and in 1962, after Louis`s death, André became the director of the Jadot House. In 1970, Gage hired young winemaker Jacques Lardière as his assistant, and in 1984, André Gage`s son, Pierre-Henri, joined the company. In 1985, to secure the future of the company, Madame Jadot decided to sell the company to the family of Rudy Kopf, American importers of the Jadot House. In 1992, Pierre-Henri Gage became president of the Louis Jadot House. Today, the Louis Jadot house owns 154 hectares of beautiful vineyards in Burgundy — from Côte d’Or to Mâcon and Beaujolais. Thanks to the highest quality of wine, the Louis Jadot House has an excellent reputation both in France and around the world — among sommeliers, restaurateurs, importers, and wine lovers. From the very beginning, the Louis Jadot house has paid attention to the importance of each Burgundy appellation — from Grand Cru to regional wines. The terroir of Burgundy is diverse — a mosaic of plots, each with its individual character deserving of respect, and the task of the Jadot house is to allow the wines to express these subtle differences and convey the true spirit of Burgundy, for this great terroir can proudly boast of its past while looking optimistically to the future. In Burgundy, wines have always been made from a single variety: Pinot Noir for reds, Chardonnay for whites, and Gamay for Beaujolais. The grapes are harvested by hand, then undergo the strictest selection. To create wines that celebrate the terroir, Jacques Lardière works with a team of experienced professionals, together ensuring the success and future of the Jadot house. Since 1995, the company has its own cooperage "Cadus," where barrels are made from oak sourced from the best forests in France. All wines from the Louis Jadot house have the same labels — featuring the image of Bacchus`s head (in ancient mythology, Bacchus is the god of wine), a decorative frieze, and a special shade of yellow, making them easily recognizable. These labels are a sign of commitment to quality, regardless of whether it is a simple Burgundy wine or a great Grand Cru.
