Interesting facts

The luxurious wine Domaine Arlaud, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru AOC is aptly described as "an iron fist in a velvet glove." This wine is deep and powerful, yet silky and vibrant, the highest expression of depth without heaviness. It feels as if its aging potential is infinite, which is not surprising given its elite origin from the Charmes-Chambertin area, known for producing some of the most elegant wines in the region. "Charmes" comes from "Chaume," meaning "straw" or "grain stalk," indicating that fields of grain once existed here. The vineyard soils are stony, well-drained, composed of gravel, chalk, and clay. The vineyards of Domaine Arlaud are divided into three sections according to the age of the vines: 80-year-old vines, 50-year-old vines, and 25-year-old vines. Their harvests are vinified separately, using about 30% whole clusters depending on the quality of the harvest. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, one-third of which are new. The 2020 growing season in Côte de Nuits was sunny, yet the wines exhibit plenty of freshness without signs of overripeness. The winter was mild, with very little precipitation. Spring saw severe frosts, but the low humidity protected the vines. The last frost occurred in mid-May, after which warm and very dry weather set in. The summer was also favorable, except for a few isolated storms. The yield was low, but the quality was excellent. The Côte de Nuits wines this year turned out concentrated, floral, and fresh, expressing the full elegance of Pinot Noir.

About the Manufacturer

The history of Domaine Arlaud began when Joseph Arlaud married a Burgundy native, Renée Amiot, during World War II. The wedding gift from Renée's relatives was invaluable vineyards, where Joseph spent all his time from 1949 to 1970, working with the vines. In 1966, he acquired the old "Grenier à sel" cellar in Nuits-Saint-Georges. This remarkable 14th-century cellar became the emblem of the winery and is still depicted on the labels. Hervé Arlaud succeeded his father in 1982 and expanded the estate's holdings. "...Modern agriculture can have a negative impact on the environment. We must preserve the uniqueness of the soil that has been cultivated for centuries. In 1999, we completely stopped using herbicides. This greatly affects soil life and pollutes groundwater. Thus, we significantly reduced the impact of chemicals on our vineyards," says Hervé Arlaud. In 2004, all 15 hectares of vineyards were fully converted to organic farming. In 2007, the company received the "Qualité France" certification, marking the first step in establishing a biological estate. In 2009, the adaptation of biodynamic methods began in the vineyards. This complex process involves using special preparations (cow manure, silicon dioxide, compost, etc.). The goal is to restore the soil and seek balance between the vineyards and other plants, which are no longer destroyed. In 2013, Cyprien Arlaud took full control of the management of the family estate. By that time, the area of his vineyards had grown to 15 hectares, consisting of 19 separate plots. Since 2014, the wines of Domaine Arlaud have been officially certified as organic and biodynamic.
