Interesting facts
Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Pauillac AOC 2-me Grand Cru Classe is an exquisite wine, each vintage of which is a true work of wine art. From the terrace of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, there is a magnificent view of the vineyards of Pauillac and Saint-Julien, as well as the Gironde estuary. Pichon Comtesse is a neighbor of Chateau Latour and, like the renowned Premier Cru, has gravel soil mixed with clay, benefiting from excellent drainage. Since Rodet took over the estate, extensive work has been done to restructure the vineyard. A thorough study of the soils and subsoils has allowed for a very detailed mapping of the many different plots and a better understanding of the terroir. A replanting program was initiated to ensure that the varieties and their root systems are best suited to the type of soil. Harvesting is done by hand at the moment of optimal berry ripeness. Vinification took place in 70 stainless steel tanks with controlled temperature, varying in size from 50 hectoliters to 70, 80, 120, and even 150 hectoliters. This allowed for very precise fermentation work. Malolactic fermentation also took place in the vessels. The wine was aged in oak barrels (60% new) for 18 months. Fining was done with egg whites.
About the Manufacturer
Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of the most brilliant and famous wineries in Bordeaux. The estate is located in the Pauillac and Saint-Julien areas, renowned for their excellent Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot vines, with an average age of 35 years. The wines of Chateau Pichon possess a full-bodied yet very soft, refined taste, achieved not only through special production technology but also through aging secrets. The wine is aged in small oak barrels for at least 18 months, with transfers every 3 months from new barrels to old, and vice versa. In the 17th century, after the landscape was transformed, the vineyards of Médoc were created, including forty gravel plots near Pauillac. Part of them was owned by Pierre de Mazure de Rauzan, who "inscribed" his name in the history of Bordeaux wines. The estate received its current name when Thérèse, the daughter of the founder who inherited the vineyards, married Jacques de Pichon Longueville, the first president of the Bordeaux Parliament. Thus began the story of one of the greatest vineyards in Bordeaux, which has preserved its integrity for over 250 years. A significant contribution to the development of the vineyards was made by the daughter of Jacques de Pichon Longueville, whose efforts not only earned the estate the title of Countess de Lalande but also secured its status as a second Cru Classe in 1855. Currently, under the guidance of the talented May Eliane de Lanxen, the estate has been modernized and has improved the quality of its wines to the point where they are consistently excellent, and in some vintages, equal to first-class wines. The wines of Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande are among the most popular and beautiful wines of Pauillac.
