Interesting facts
In tribute to the famous Englishman and great personality of the 20th century — Sir Winston Churchill, the Pol Roger house presented the unique cuvée "Sir Winston Churchill" from the 1975 vintage in 1984 — one of the rarest cuvées in the world. Sir Winston Churchill was the most famous and loyal customer of Pol Roger. In his later years, up to 500 cases of champagne were delivered to his wine cellar. The company even provided him with its wine in unique bottles — specially made 1 imperial pint bottles, which were served to Churchill in the mornings. His favorite champagne accompanied him on trains behind the front lines during the war and on diplomatic missions in the post-war period. Once, Winston Churchill said: "I cannot live without champagne. I deserve it after victory, and I need it after defeat." A well-known aesthete, Churchill had a special preference for Pol Roger wines and remained loyal to them throughout his life. In 1965, after his death, the Pol Roger house introduced a black mourning ribbon on its bottles. The cuvée "Sir Winston Churchill" is crafted from selected grapes of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. The exact grape composition is kept secret by the producers, but experts suggest that 80% of the blend consists of Pinot Noir, as this was the proportion preferred by Winston Churchill. After harvesting, the grapes are quickly and gently pressed. The first settling occurs at the press center, and the second in a vacuum tank at a temperature of 6 °C for one day. The varieties are vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at a reduced temperature of 18 °C in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Then malolactic fermentation is conducted, the wines are blended, the cuvée is tasted, and bottled, where secondary fermentation occurs. Each bottle is turned by hand in the traditional manner. The cuvée is aged for 10 years. In the taste of cuvée "Sir Winston Churchill," elegance and smoothness combine with strength and expressiveness, which is a hallmark of this truly great cuvée.
About the Manufacturer
The history of Pol Roger, one of the finest champagne houses, began over 150 years ago. The Pol Roger house is located in the heart of Champagne — Épernay. Throughout its history, the house has been owned by only one family. Today, the champagne house belongs to the great-grandchildren of the founders — Christian de Billy and Christian Pol Roger. Pol Roger owns over 80 hectares of vineyards located in the best areas of Champagne, and 60% of its grape supply comes from its own vineyards. The remaining grapes are sourced from farmers with whom Pol Roger has collaborated for a long time. This allows for quality control at the initial stage of champagne production. Pol Roger supplies wines to the court of Queen Elizabeth II. Notable fans of this brand include billionaire Rockefeller and legendary French president Charles de Gaulle. It is no surprise that the Pol Roger brand is considered one of the most prestigious — this champagne is distinguished by its highest quality, elegance, and aristocratic style.
