Interesting facts
Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2019 is a full-bodied, dense, juicy, and persistent wine that will require several years of additional aging before it fully reveals itself. The peak maturity of this vintage is expected between 2035 and 2065. Chateau Mouton Rothschild is renowned for its collection of labels for its wines, featuring works by famous contemporary artists since 1945. The label for the 2019 vintage showcases a piece titled "Sun Iris of Mouton," specially designed by Olafur Eliasson for Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The painting is an abstract portrait of the landscape. The label is divided horizontally: the golden stripe at the top reflects daytime, while the dark blue stripe at the bottom represents night. In the center, a round cutout allows the wine inside the bottle to be seen. Surrounding it is a series of ellipses forming a ring that illustrates the sun`s trajectory relative to the planet at the location of Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac. The segments of the ring above the dividing line form white arcs on a golden border, with the lowest arc indicating the shortest day of the year and the upper arc indicating the longest. At the top of the solar diagram, elongated eights intersect the arcs at equal intervals. These shapes, known as analemmas, represent the path of the sun visible from a single point over the year. In the past, they were used in astronomy and in conjunction with sundials to determine time more accurately. Solar maps, astronomical phenomena, and navigational instruments have long served as sources of inspiration for the artist`s many works. The year 2019 began with a warmer and drier winter than usual, with temperatures reaching a record 24.7 °C on February 27. Such mild weather prompted an early start to the growing cycle, which gradually slowed with the arrival of a cooler spring with below-average temperatures. Cool temperatures and heavy rains were observed in June, followed by a hot July. Just before the harvest, the vines remained in excellent condition. Several rainfalls in July and August alleviated winemakers` concerns about dehydration. The harvest of red grape varieties at Chateau Mouton Rothschild took place from September 18 to October 5. Despite intermittent rain during the harvest, conditions remained generally very good, ensuring grapes of excellent quality. Reflecting the generosity of nature in 2019, the wines of this season are very rich, dense, smooth, with silky tannins.
About the Manufacturer
Chateau Mouton Rothschild is among the greatest Chateaux in Bordeaux and is undoubtedly the brightest star of Pauillac, with its wines being some of the best in the world. The first Rothschild to take winemaking seriously was Baron Philippe, although the estate was purchased in 1853 by his grandfather Nathaniel Rothschild. It was Baron Philippe who first experimented with most of the technologies that are now used by all top-class chateaux. The main innovation of the Baron was that wines began to be bottled directly at the estate rather than at merchants. In addition, the winemaking processes themselves were improved, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve sophistication, expressiveness, power, and a lifespan that practically approaches infinity. Baron Philippe was also the only person able to make changes to the classification of Bordeaux wines established in 1855: the classification was revised in 1973, and the estate upgraded from second to first growth. Even the Chateau Mouton Rothschild itself deserves special attention, as Baron Philippe and his daughter Philippine, who is now the owner of the Chateau, have long collected art related to wine. The castle houses the "Wine in Art" Museum, founded in 1962.
