Interesting facts

Mud House, Pinot Noir is a dry red wine made from Pinot Noir grapes grown in the Bendigo subregion of Central Otago. The soils here are clayey with gravel layers, perfectly suited for cultivating this variety. Significant temperature fluctuations allow the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness and sweetness, while the winemakers' artistry transforms the berries into an elegant wine with individual character and exceptional organoleptic characteristics. After harvesting, the grapes undergo gentle destemming followed by fermentation at controlled temperatures. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels and is completed in the spring of the following year. As experts say, "in this wine, the Old World meets the New... with a glass of Mud House, Pinot Noir, you embark on a world tour in one glass."

About the Manufacturer

The founders of Mud House Winery are the husband and wife team John and Jennifer Joslin. They spent several years traveling the world before they began making wine. Several decades ago, their journey brought them to New Zealand. It was almost immediate; they fell in love with this magical land and decided to build their home and plant their vineyards here. Thus, in 1996, Mud House Winery was born – a clay house. Taking the matter very seriously, the founders carefully selected individual vines for planting in each type of soil. This approach allows each of Mud House's wines to vividly reflect the terroir from which it comes. The Mud House team combines traditional methods with innovative techniques in winemaking. Not much time has passed since its founding, and Mud House wines have received numerous gold and silver awards at international competitions. Both winemakers at Mud House are locals, but before they decided to dedicate themselves to their homeland, they worked in various corners of the world. The chief winemaker Cleighten Cornelius previously made wine in France (Chambolle-Musigny), Germany (Rheingau), and Cyprus, while his assistant Krystal Palmer worked in various New Zealand vineyards, as well as in the USA and China. Currently, Mud House has vineyards in three regions in Central Otago, in the Waipara Valley, and in Marlborough. In Marlborough, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are mainly grown, from which the basic line of Mud House originates, while the Woolshed line also produces wines from Marlborough, but from a single vineyard. In Central Otago, Pinot Noir is primarily grown – about 80%, while the rest consists of white varieties Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay. Wines from this region belong to the Claim 431 line. In Waipara, Mud House grows Pinot Noir and Riesling, released under the The Home Block line. The winery was first sold in 2006 when the founders realized they could not independently elevate the business to a new level and ensure further production growth. Since 2013, Mud House has been owned by the wine giant Accolade, which has added a well-established distribution network for the good product worldwide. According to Accolade Group data for 2021, Mud House wine sales have grown by an average of +53% annually, and the brand is among the top five largest and strongest wine producers in New Zealand.
