Interesting facts
The Piqueras wine, "Old Vines" Garnacha, Almansa DO is made from organically grown Garnacha Tintorera grapes (also known as Alicante Bouschet), which can withstand the hot and dry summers of Spain. The grapes are harvested from 50-year-old vines. The berries have colored flesh, requiring less skin contact during fermentation. The grapes are hand-picked in early October, sorted with special attention to small berries that possess an astonishingly high concentration of flavor. The grapes are fermented on the skins at a temperature of 25 °C for 2 weeks to preserve the natural fruity aroma rather than to extract tannins. The wine is then aged in medium-toasted American oak barrels for 6-8 months.
About the Manufacturer
The Piqueras winery was founded in 1915 by the Piqueras family. It is located in the Almansa region in southeastern Spain, 60 km from Alicante and the Mediterranean Sea. This wine region is characterized by low yields due to low rainfall. The semi-arid continental climate allows for wines with rich color and aroma. Wines are typically produced from local grape varieties — Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell. In 1972, the "Castillo de Almansa" brand was launched. In 2001, the winery acquired the Finca los Timonares vineyard. In 2003, a new 7000 sq.m. facility was opened with a production capacity of 3,000,000 liters of wine. Since 2010, the company has been managed by Pablo and Javier, the fourth generation of the Piqueras family. The main goal of the winery is to produce high-quality wines that are represented in markets in over 40 countries worldwide.
