Interesting facts
"Sela" is a young, aromatic, stylish wine for young people who are beginning to live the passion of the wine world. Made from grapes harvested from organic vineyards and aged for 12 months in two-year-old French oak barrels, it is ready to drink immediately after its market release. The name of the wine comes from a Scandinavian river, where the owner of Bodegas Roda—Mario Rotllan—regularly goes to recharge and fish in the magnificent landscape. "Sela" can be served chilled, like white wine, thus emphasizing its freshness and fruitiness. This is why "Sela" is excellent as an aperitif. Additionally, the wine pairs wonderfully with appetizers and any hot dishes, especially meat. The peak maturity of the 2021 vintage will be from 2024 to 2030. Spring 2021 was very dry, but the vineyard thrived thanks to the reserves from winter and 2020. Spring temperatures, especially in March and April, were cool. July was very dry, with several individual days of intense heat. August was also very hot. Despite this, average summer temperatures were lower than in recent years. The summer drought reduced production, resulting in a moderate harvest. In September, it rained in La Rioja, but little precipitation fell in the area of Haro. Magnificent weather in late September and October contributed to excellent ripening completion. Harvesting began on September 22 and ended on October 20, 2021.
About the Manufacturer
Bodegas Roda is located in the northwestern part of the Rioja region, in Barrio de la Estación. This small town on the southern bank of the Ebro River is associated with some of the greatest wines of Rioja, as well as some of the most revered wineries that have existed since the mid-19th century. Bodegas Roda was founded in 1987 by Catalans Mario Rotllan and Carmen Daurella. Their goal was to create excellent, highly expressive red wines in a modern style that reflect the terroir of the region and varietal characteristics in a unique embodiment. The symbol of the winery, conveying the meaning of its vision for its wines, is the image of a thistle—an elegant, resilient flower closely tied to the landscape and capable of lasting long after being cut. The owners of Bodegas Roda carefully studied Bordeaux wines as a benchmark for technique and quality. Consulting with renowned Spanish viticulturist Félix Alonso, Mario acquired 21 vineyards covering a total area of 150 hectares in the best areas of Rioja Alta and Alavesa. All vineyards are cultivated without chemicals, and the harvest is done by hand, with vine ages ranging from 30 to 90 years.
