Interesting facts

"IDDA" is a project that was planned back in 2015 and has become a subject of great excitement on the Italian wine scene. Wine producer Alberto Graci from Etna teamed up with the Barbaresco legend Angelo Gaja from Piedmont to create IDDA. The release of the dry red wine in 2017 took place in 2019, followed by the release of the dry white "IDDA" in 2020. The name for the wine is taken from the Sicilian dialect, meaning "she" — a tender nickname that locals use to refer to Mount Etna. To create the exquisite white wine "IDDA" Bianco, the producer uses Carricante grapes grown in Biancavilla on the southwestern slope of Mount Etna, at an altitude of 700-800 meters above sea level, and in Belpasso on the southern slope of Mount Etna, at an altitude of 600-700 meters above sea level. The harvested grapes are pressed whole bunches at low temperatures. After static clarification, fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature of 18-20 °C, partially in oak barrels of 10 hectoliters and partially in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in the same containers for 8 months, filtered, and bottled.

About the Manufacturer

The Gaja brand was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, the great-grandfather of the current owner Angelo Gaja, and has been in the Gaja family for five generations. Today, Gaja Winery owns vineyards totaling 250 hectares located in the provinces of Tuscany and Piedmont. Angelo Gaja began working in the family business in 1961 after completing his education at the Enological Institute of Alba and the University of Montpellier (later obtaining a degree in economics from the University of Turin). Angelo has visited France several times and, inspired by modern and traditional techniques of French winemakers, began applying the acquired experience in the production of his own wines. His magnetism, charm, and poetic reflections on the nature of wine make Angelo Gaja one of the most respected and beloved figures in the Italian wine industry. In 2011, "Wine Spectator" named Angelo Gaja one of the best winemakers in the history of Piedmont and Tuscany.
