Interesting facts

"Do not spoil the wine with water, which you have poured / Drink the wine undiluted, taste the wine pure", — Epigram XX, Roman poet Ozon (301-395). The wine "Chateau Ausone" is considered one of the rarest and most prestigious wines of the Bordeaux region. Moreover, it is one of two wines, along with "Chateau Cheval Blanc," awarded the title of Premier Cru Classe "A" in the 1955 classification of Saint-Emilion wines. Additionally, "Chateau Ausone" is the third most expensive wine in Bordeaux, surpassed only by "Petrus" and "Le Pin." In its youth, "Chateau Ausone" wines may have high tannins, but with age, they soften, fully integrating into the excellent deep structure. After hand-harvesting the grapes, accompanied by careful selection, fermentation is carried out in wooden containers with controlled temperature. Then malolactic fermentation occurs in oak barrels, where the wine is subsequently aged for 24 months. Aging takes place in the limestone caves of the Chateau Ausone estate. The wine has a storage potential of up to 50 years, although some vintages can preserve the unique taste of "Chateau Ausone" for up to 100 years. Thus, the 2004 vintage, which "has exceptional power and concentration... while leaving an impression of surreal lightness... with a beautiful aroma, sensational depth, and rich structure," according to the famous Robert Parker, can be stored at least until 2045.

About the Manufacturer

Chateau Ausone is located on the right bank of the Bordeaux wine region near the town of Saint-Emilion. Legend has it that Chateau Ausone was named after the Roman poet and politician Ausonius — according to tradition, the estate is located on the ruins of the poet's villa. In addition to poetry, politics, and rhetoric, Ausonius was engaged in winemaking and owned a vineyard that was apparently located near Bordeaux. Since the early 18th century, the estate has been owned by the Canten family, under which the prestige of Chateau Ausone wine gradually increased. However, in the second half of the 20th century, disputes arose among the heirs of Chateau Ausone regarding winemaking and management. In 2003, the main heiress of the estate, Ele-Dubois Chalon, passed away, and Chateau Ausone fully came under the management of Alain Vauthier. The Chateau Ausone vineyard is located on limestone soils of the Saint-Emilion appellation, partially in a lowland that protects the grapes from frost. Being small in size (about 7 hectares), the vineyard allows winemakers to carefully tend to each vine. The average age of the vines is 50 years. Half of the land is planted with Cabernet Franc, and half with Merlot. Chateau Ausone also produces a second wine — "Chapelle d'Ausone" and wines "Ch. Moulin Saint Georges", "Ch. de Fonbel". In total, Chateau Ausone produces no more than 2,000 cases of wine per year.
