About the Manufacturer
The founder of the famous Clicquot winery was Monsieur Philippe Clicquot, who registered the company under his own name in 1772. Just three years later, the first bottles of rosé Champagne were presented to the consumer. The family business was later inherited by François Clicquot, who married Nicole Ponsardin in 1798. It was this fragile woman, widowed at 27, who had to take over the management of the company. Madame Nicole Barbe Clicquot-Ponsardin, later known as the Grande Dame of Champagne, proved to be a very talented manager. Thanks to her, the Clicquot Wine House, which officially became known as Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin in 1810, became a symbol of prestige. Madame Clicquot gifted the world a clear sparkling Champagne that had previously been cloudy and had sediment. She developed and successfully applied a new technology in which the wine bottle was placed in a vertical position in several stages. The yeast sediment accumulated in the neck, which was then frozen and easily removed as an ice plug. The main principles of this method (riddling) are still used today in Champagne production. In addition, caring for the excellent quality of the wine produced, Madame Clicquot purchased the best vineyards in the area and tirelessly monitored their condition. In 1814, Clicquot Champagne first appeared in Russia and immediately captivated the Russian capital with its perfect taste, purity, and playfulness. No grand ball in St. Petersburg was complete without this sparkling drink, which became so popular that it was mentioned by A.S. Pushkin in his poetry. Starting in 1815, shipments of Clicquot Champagne to Russia grew rapidly, and within five years accounted for about 65% of exports, confirming that during this period, the Russian high society became the most devoted admirer of Clicquot Champagne. The widow Clicquot — the famous Grande Dame of Champagne, lived to be 89 years old and passed away in 1866. She left her heirs a thriving business and gifted the world a true masterpiece of Champagne winemaking. At the beginning of the last century, the specialists of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin dedicated a beautiful Champagne, Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame, to Madame Clicquot, which was created using 19th-century technology from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Today, the vineyards of the Clicquot House cover an area of 286 hectares, where Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay are grown. From these, the magnificent Veuve Clicquot Champagne line is produced, which includes wines with varying sugar content: brut, sec, and demi-sec. Currently, the famous Veuve Clicquot brand ranks second in the world in terms of sales, which amount to 12 million bottles per year, and is exported to 110 countries worldwide.
