Saint Clair Family Estate was founded in 1978 by Neil and Judy Ibbotson. In the early days, the couple sold grapes to local wineries, and in 1994 they launched their own wine production. The debut was extremely successful — their wines won numerous awards, including Gold Medals. Since then, the name Saint Clair has come to symbolize excellent quality, and the products consistently win the highest awards at international competitions, including the prestigious "Air New Zealand Wine Awards." A huge role in the successful operation and excellent reputation of the company is played by the professionals working here. This undoubtedly includes members of the Ibbotson family, who are involved in the design, promotion, and marketing of Saint Clair wines. And the chief winemaker — Matt Thomson, who has been with the company since 1994 and has experience in creating Italian and French wines. In 2008, Matt Thomson was named "Winemaker of the Year" at the London International Wine Challenge.
