Interesting facts
The "Old Coach Road" runs along the mountain ridge in the Moutere area. In the 1850s, this road began to transport regular mail, first on foot and later on horseback. The "Old Coach Road" wine line was created in the early 1990s to expand the range and elevate the company to an international level. The rich, elegant wine "Old Coach Road" Chardonnay showcases a harmonious aroma and a pleasant, well-balanced taste with notes of tropical fruits and a long aftertaste. It is produced from Chardonnay grapes grown in the Rabbit Island vineyard. After harvesting, the berries are sent to the winery, where they undergo destemming and gentle pressing. Fermentation occurs at low temperatures to preserve the freshness of the aroma. After primary fermentation, 70% of the wine is aged in barrels made of French and American oak of first, second, and third use. Malolactic fermentation is applied to 60% of the blend.
About the Manufacturer
The Seifried family winery was founded in 1973 in the Moutere Valley. Austrian native Hermann Seifried, along with his wife Agnes, purchased 2 hectares of clay soils in the Nelson area to fulfill Hermann's dream, who received his education in Germany and gained winemaking experience at one of the largest corporations in South Africa — KWV. In 1976, the first five varietal wines were produced. At that time, wine sales were conducted directly from the cellar and only by mail order. After some time, the Seifried family acquired two more vineyards located in Rabbit Island and Redwood Valley. Today, the company owns 180 hectares, where varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling are grown. In 1993, the Seifried family built a restaurant in the middle of the vineyard on Rabbit Island, which soon became a very popular venue for celebrations, weddings, and other events. In 1996, the winery moved here along with all services and offices. Today, 40% of the company's annual production is exported to many countries worldwide, 55% is supplied to the local market, and the remaining 5% is sold directly from the cellar.
