Interesting facts
Chateau Giscours is the flagship wine of the estate of the same name. In 2020, the Chateau Giscours team pursued the same goal as in 2019, striving to maintain the typical style of Chateau Giscours. To achieve this, work was done on two concepts that are close to Chateau Giscours: aromatic brilliance and the refinement of tannins. The technical team at Giscours ensured an individual approach to each vineyard. The winemakers know their terroir and the rows they are responsible for well, and all consider these vineyard acres as micro-gardens. The 2020 vintage is one that Chateau Giscours is particularly proud of. Deep knowledge of the terroir and the experience of the team led to the creation of a luxurious wine. Exquisite, with a bright personality, it possesses all the power and fleshiness of the best Chateau Giscours wines and resembles the texture of taffeta with silky tannins. This vintage reflects all the meticulousness and boldness that guided the Chateau team during the atypical year of 2020. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The vineyard soils are sand and gravel, through which the roots penetrate deep into the ground. The harvest in 2020 took place from September 8 to October 2. The wine is produced using hand harvesting and careful grape selection. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel and concrete tanks at temperatures of 28-30 °C for 35 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels, half of which are new, for 17 months. The 2020 vintage will reveal its potential most fully between 2027-2055. The growing season in 2020 in Margaux began with a warm winter, followed by a similarly warm and very humid spring. Increased humidity not only meant excessively rapid vine growth but also the spread of rot and diseases. However, high temperatures contributed to early bud break and flowering. The summer months brought incredibly hot and dry weather. Rain in mid-August revived the vines. As a result of the hot and dry summer, the berries were tiny, concentrated, and intense, and this naturally reflected in the wines, which were overall excellent. The 2020 harvest for Margaux was stunning, producing a wide range of excellent wines.
About the Manufacturer
The first written mention of Chateau Giscours, confirming the sale of the property, dates back to 1330 and refers to a fortified fortress. Records of winemaking at Chateau Giscours begin in 1552 when Señor de la Bastida sold it to Pierre de Orme. Before the French Revolution, the Chateau belonged to the Saint-Saëns family, then it was confiscated and later, in 1793, purchased by two Americans from Boston — John Gray and Jonathan Davis. After that, the estate had several owners, but with the acquisition of the property by banker Count de Pescatore in 1845, who hired Pierre Scavinski to manage the estate in 1847, a great era began for the Chateau. Scavinski proved to be a great farmer. In 1860 he invented a plow that now bears his name, and he became a pioneer in the fight against mildew. Scavinski also played a significant role in establishing the wines of Chateau Giscours and securing their authoritative positions in rankings. Pierre Scavinski managed the estate for over 50 years, including during the time when the Chateau was owned by the Cru family (this period is noted as one of the most successful in the estate's history). The Cru family sold the estate in 1913. This was followed by long and difficult years. In 1954, the estate was acquired by Nicolas Tari, a famous winemaker from Algeria, who restored the Chateau and expanded the vineyards, making the estate very productive. In 1995, Chateau Giscours was purchased by Eric Albada Jelgersma. Thanks to Eric's efforts, the wines of Chateau Giscours gained recognition and became some of the best wines in Bordeaux. Today, the vineyards of the Chateau are located in three wine-growing areas of the Margaux appellation: Cantena, Labarde, and Arsac. The characteristics of the local soils allow for the production of wines that possess softness and elegance. The winemaking technology at Chateau Giscours is carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the International Organization for Standardization, issued to the estate in January 2001, which guarantees their consistently high quality.
