Interesting facts
"Gnarly Head" Old Vine Zinfandel is a rich, bold red wine that pairs perfectly with meat dishes, cheeses, and pasta. The grapes for this wine come from old, gnarled vines ranging from 35 to 80 years old. They grow in the Lodi region, known as the "Zinfandel capital of the world." The region's climate is ideal for producing concentrated, full-flavored grapes—well-drained sandy soil, warm summer days, and cool night breezes from the Pacific Ocean create optimal conditions. The grapes are hand-harvested at night, primarily in the Mokelumne River area, home to some of the oldest and most respected vineyards in Lodi. At the winery, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation lasts 7-9 days, after which the wine is carefully transferred to French and American oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. The result is a bold, intense wine capable of captivating even the most discerning palate.
About the Manufacturer
The "Delicato Family" company was founded in 1924 by Gaspare Indelicato, an immigrant from Sicily. Gaspare saw similarities between the Italian climate and the warm, sunny climate of California. His dream was to grow quality grapes to create premium wines at affordable prices. He planted a small 4.8-hectare vineyard at the foot of the mountains near Lodi. The company gradually expanded. Gaspare's sons acquired new vineyards, including the San Bernabe vineyard in the cooler part of the Monterey Valley. This vineyard became the keystone for the quality of Delicato wines. Today, the family winery owns 2,833 hectares of vineyards located in various climatic zones of California—from the cool Monterey coast to the hot foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Lodi. Delicato is one of the most successful American wineries. Each year, the estate sells over sixteen and a half million bottles of wine worldwide. The successes of the Delicato winemakers have not gone unnoticed. The commission of the prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition awarded Delicato Family the honorary title of Best Winery of the Year in the USA for two consecutive years, in 2001 and 2002. Additionally, Delicato's Shiraz was twice (in 2001–2002) named the best Californian wine in its category at the annual California State Fair.
