Interesting facts

Chateau Quintus is the fifth creation of Clarence Dillon, made from traditional Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Saint-Émilion, where the grapes for Chateau Quintus are grown, is the oldest winemaking site in the Bordeaux region. The first grapevines were planted here by ancient Romans as early as the 2nd century. The name pays homage to the Gallo-Romans, the creators of the Saint-Émilion vineyards, who had a custom of naming their fifth child Quintus. UNESCO has included the Saint-Émilion terroir in its World Heritage list. Saint-Émilion wines are considered the most authentic of Bordeaux wines. They are very generous and reach their maturity faster than other Bordeaux reds. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, 37.2% of which are new. The 2020 vintage will fully reveal its potential between 2025 and 2045. The winter of 2020 was mild and wet. The growing season began very early (the earliest season since 1989). In spring, constant rainfall contributed to the appearance of mold, so winemakers had to be doubly vigilant. Flowering was also very early. From mid-June to mid-August, there was an exceptionally hot and dry period, during which three heatwaves were recorded. As a result, vineyard work was reduced, especially leaf thinning, to protect the integrity of the grape clusters and preserve aromatic freshness. From August 11, there were constant rains that allowed the grapes to reach perfect ripeness. The air temperature was above the seasonal average, which was ideal for completing the ripening of all red grape varieties, which arrived at the winery in excellent condition.

About the Manufacturer

Clarence Douglas Dillon was an American politician, diplomat, and the 57th Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. He was in love with France. This is why in 1935 Dillon acquired a French winery called Chateau Haut-Brion, which is now famous worldwide for its excellent wines. The chateau is located in the commune of Pessac-Léognan in the Bordeaux region. According to the Official Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855, the chateau belongs to the highest category — Premier Grand Cru. Clarence Dillon did not want to change anything on the acquired territory, as he respected the centuries-old heritage of these lands. Today, in the 21st century, his descendants adhere to the same ideas. Thus, since 1935, the Dillon family has continued the work started by Jean de Pontac in the 16th century. Neither wars nor downturns in the wine market have affected the quality of the produced beverages. In 1983, the family acquired the nearby Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion. Today, Domaine Clarence Dillon produces legendary red and white wines of the region — Chateau Haut-Brion and Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion, as well as the wines "Chateau Quintus" and "Clarendelle". Prince Robert of Luxembourg became the head of the company of his great-grandfather 70 years after Clarence Dillon's arrival in Bordeaux. He began to write the history of the Dillon family on new, clean sheets of time, creating the Domaine branch — Clarence Dillon Wines, which since 2005 has produced and presented a premium wine line "Clarendelle". Its name comes from the first and last name of Clarence Dillon and, according to the owners' idea, it should become a continuation of the winemaking tradition of unparalleled quality established many decades earlier. The philosophy of the line is to shed new light on the immense potential and know-how of the Bordeaux region, which has become a benchmark for winemaking worldwide. The "Clarendelle" line includes 4 wines: dry red, white, rosé, and sweet white. Today, these wines are represented in the largest networks of hotels, airlines, and cruise liners.
