Interesting facts
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, Nuits-Saint-Georges "Les Plateaux" AOC is an organic red wine with a good tannin structure and a pure berry aroma. The wines of the "Nuits" designation are the fullest, strongest, and most tannic of all Côte-de-Nuits wines. Although they are generally ready to drink 4-5 years after bottling, they can age for over 10 years. They are full-bodied, dense, and of a dark rich color. Their aromas are powerful and complex. The Nuits-Saint-Georges "Les Plateaux" AOC wine is produced from Pinot Noir grapes harvested from 45-year-old vines grown on clay-limestone soil in the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation. The vines are treated using the Guyot system, with leaf thinning and "green" harvesting. The harvest is done by hand when the berries reach optimal ripeness. The harvested grapes are carefully sorted and destemmed. A light cold maceration lasting 4 to 5 days allows for the extraction of coloring and tannins. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 30 °C for 12-15 days. This process is accompanied by daily punching down. Vincent Mongeard practices moderate and rational sulfiting, which is necessary because sulfur dioxide is a natural antiseptic that helps neutralize bacterial growth. After fermentation, the wine is aged in Allier and Nivernais oak barrels (30-40% new) for 18-22 months. The wood, air-dried, imparts roundness and softness to the wine during aging. Weekly topping up and periodic racking are performed throughout the first year of aging. The wine is bottled without prior filtration and spends additional time in the winery`s cellars.
About the Manufacturer
The Mongeard family settled in Vosne-Romanée in the 18th century. Local archives mention that in 1786, members of the Mongeard family worked at the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti winery. Subsequently, the lives of many generations of this family have been closely linked to viticulture and winemaking. One of the last owners of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is Jean Mongeard (his mother`s maiden name is Mugneret). As a child, Jean lost his father and at 16 took on the responsibilities of managing the winery. Since 1975, Jean Mongeard worked with his son Vincent, who was responsible for the vineyards and controlled the vinification process of all produced wines. He convinced his father to resume the traditional bottling of wine without prior filtration, leaving its use only for certain brands. Jean is one of the most renowned producers in Vosne-Romanée and a prominent figure among Burgundy winemakers. As president of the Côte d`Or winemakers` association, he fully handed over the management of the Domaine to his son in 1985 and retired ten years later. Currently, the estate`s vineyards, which include parts of the famous Grand Cru plots "Clos de Vougeot" and "Richebourg", cover more than 33 hectares. The excellent Pinot Noir vines are 45-50 years old and, with careful management, yield only 39 hectoliters per hectare. Vincent Mongeard advocates traditional winemaking methods and uses only the best wood in wine production.
