About the Manufacturer
In 1582, Princess Margarita of Austria, daughter of Emperor Charles V, married Duke Ottavio Farnese and purchased the city of Ortona for 52,000 ducats. Enchanted by the fresh air and picturesque lands of the area, she decided to build a castle on the coast for relaxation. The construction of "Margarita" — as the castle was affectionately called — gave a significant boost to the development of the surrounding lands and the cultivation of vineyards and winemaking. The wines quickly became not just popular, but adorned numerous banquets of the main European courts. Today, the Farnese company continues to cultivate those very vineyards located in the northern part of the picturesque Moro River valley. The vineyards have excellent exposure, and the towering Maiella mountain, just 30 kilometers away, creates a great microclimate. The area of rented vineyards is 150 hectares, with an annual production of 11,000,000 bottles. According to wine critic Antonio Galloni of "Wine Advocate", "Farnese wines are pure, 'correct', and very tasty. The estate does not stray too far from its main course — the production of simple, well-made wines". Currently, Farnese offers two lines: the first is simple varietal wines, and the second is the "Casale Vecchio" series, which consists of wines of special selections. Farnese represents an unparalleled "price-quality" ratio and has been recognized as the "Italian Winery of the Year" for three consecutive years!
