Planeta Cometa Sicilia Menfi DOC

Planeta is the family name of Italian winemakers, three representatives of which — Alessio, Francesca, and Santi — along with enologist Carlo, currently manage this estate. The Planeta family has made a significant contribution to agriculture in the Sicily region. As for winemaking, although this industry is relatively new to them, they have built a true empire of four estates with vineyards and two wineries located along the southern coast of Sicily, connected by one road. The Ulmo winery was the first step for the Planeta family. It was built in 1995 near Sambuca di Sicilia, focusing on white wines, mainly from Chardonnay and Fiano. Here, "Segreta" Bianco, "Alastro", "Cometa", and the famous Chardonnay are produced — a wine that brought the company worldwide fame. There are also beautiful tasting rooms located in a 16th-century mansion, numerous vineyards, and an old olive grove. In 2001, Planeta built the Dispensa winery near the town of Menfi, even closer to the coast. Here, their efforts are focused on red wines, and the winery is surrounded by the largest of the family-owned vineyards. At this winery, "La Segreta" Rosso, Merlot, Syrah, and the magnificent "Burdese" — a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc — are produced. Planeta also has vineyards further east: in Noto (Syracuse) with Nero d'Avola and Moscato, and at the family estate Dorilli, in Acate, where they grow indigenous red varieties Nero d'Avola and Frappato. The exceptional and consistently high-quality wines of Planeta have earned a rightful place among the best wines of Italian producers and have been recognized with many awards at specialized wine competitions and tastings.
