Interesting facts
Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson, Corton Grand Cru "Le Rognet-et-Corton" AOC is a rich dry red wine with an alluring velvety texture, making it an excellent choice for exquisite dinners. The Pinot Noir for this wine is grown on a Grand Cru vineyard in the commune of Aloxe-Corton. "Le Rognet-et-Corton" is a substitute designation for Corton Grand Cru in the commune of Ladoix in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. The vineyard is located on the eastern slopes of the Montagne de Corton overlooking the village of Ladoix. Its eastern edge forms the boundary of the commune of Aloxe-Corton. The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level and has an eastern exposure. The soils here are poor limestone, with excellent drainage properties. The vines, some of which are up to 70 years old, are cultivated using organic and biodynamic farming methods, without the use of herbicides and other chemicals. Through targeted biological management, a mutual harmony of soil, climate, and vines is achieved. The Pinot Noir variety, believed to have originated in Burgundy, fully demonstrates its flavor qualities in the local climate, endowing the wine with a juicy fruit and berry palette and rich aroma. The harvest for the Corton Grand Cru "Le Rognet-et-Corton" AOC wine is hand-picked when the berries reach optimal ripeness. At the winery, the berries undergo partial destemming (90%) and crushing. The pulp of the Pinot Noir grapes is light, with colorants almost entirely in the skin, so a prolonged 25-30 day maceration endows the wine with a rich color and tannins. After gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation occurs in large vats, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for at least 12 months in 228-, 350-, and 500-liter French oak barrels, 10% of which are new, with weekly batonnage. Before bottling, a light filtration is performed. The wine has a potential aging capacity of at least 5 years, and with proper storage, maintaining humidity and temperature, it will reveal its best qualities over 30 years. The 2018 vintage gifted Burgundy with a rare harvest, distinguished by both quality and quantity. Abundant precipitation in winter and spring provided the soils with a sufficient supply of groundwater. In other appellations in France, the wet spring triggered the appearance and rapid spread of mold. The warm, sunny summer favored grape ripening, and instances of frost, hail, or diseases in Burgundy were extremely rare. The excellent weather conditions led to an earlier harvest, which was necessary to preserve the characteristic freshness and acidity of the 2018 wines.
About the Manufacturer
The picturesque and charming village of Saint-Romain has a rich and ancient winemaking history. The Dukes of Burgundy have been purchasing grapes here since 1300. The name Buisson has been known in Saint-Romain since the 12th century, with family winemaking secrets passed down for eight generations. The 1950s marked a turning point in the history of the Buisson family. While wine was primarily sold in bulk, the avant-garde spirit of Henri and Marguerite Buisson fundamentally changed the situation. The couple decided to bottle the wine, putting their name on the label, thus creating the yet unofficial Domaine Buisson. Today, in the winery's cellars, bottles of the very first harvest from 1947 are preserved as a family treasure! Soon, Gilles Buisson, Henri's son, and his wife Monika took over the domain. The joint efforts of father and son led to the official winery Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson. Promoting tourism, the first hotel was opened at the winery in the 1980s, which became the calling card of the village of Saint-Romain. The success achieved prompted the creation of another hotel in Saint-Romain-le-O in 1994. A short distance from the hotel are the historic site of Cluny and the ruins of a 12th-century fortress, which give this place an unusual atmosphere. During this time, the winery also acquired vineyards in prestigious appellations: Grand cru de Corton Charlemagne, Pommard, Volnay 1er Cru, and Beaune. Today, the estate has 19 hectares of vineyards. This story of the Domaine does not end here; it is just beginning thanks to the sons of Monika and Gilles Buisson. Although both brothers, Frédéric and Franck, inherited a passion for wine and love for the land, only Frédéric decided to pursue professional education. With a master's degree in international trade and a national diploma in oenology, Frédéric Buisson promises to be a worthy successor to his father's work. In the 1970s, Henri Buisson was already working in agrobiology. Therefore, it was obvious for the two brothers to continue the work started by their grandfather and give it new life. It was the young Buisson brothers who achieved the official certification of the estate by ECOCERT as organic. Since 2012, all cuvées of the estate have been released with the label "Organic Farming" — a testament that the family heritage is in reliable hands.
