Interesting facts
"Il Caberlot" is the first and flagship wine of the Podere Il Carnasciale estate, possessing what Wine Spectator describes as an "unrealistically beautiful" elegant taste with excellent structure, finely polished tannins, and a long impeccable aftertaste. The wine is produced from a unique and mysterious grape clone discovered four decades ago in an abandoned vineyard near Padua. The clone was named Caberlo because the grape exhibits characteristics of both Cabernet and Merlot. This rare clone is grown only in one location of the Il Carnasciale winery - on the rocky southern bank of the Tuscan Arno River. Since its first vintage in 1988, "Il Caberlo" has become a true cult wine in Europe, partly due to its scarcity, resulting from the small vineyard size of less than an acre and limited yield. Over time, the number of planted vines has increased, but production remains insignificant. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 22 months, bottled only by hand, and then aged for another two years in cellars. The estate owner, Bettina Rogoski, personally numbers the labels, the color of which changes each year. The wine has excellent aging potential, with the 2014 vintage expected to reach its peak maturity between 2019 and 2039.
About the Manufacturer
The Podere Il Carnasciale winery is located in the southern part of the Chianti mountains, in the Valdarno area, near Siena and Arezzo, sixty kilometers south of Florence. This small estate was created by Wolf and Bettina Rogoski. Today it is managed by Bettina and her son Moritz, in collaboration with enologist Peter Schilling. In 1985, after severe frosts destroyed the family's magnificent olive groves, Wolf decided to cultivate a rare grape clone - Caberlo, which is a natural hybrid of Cabernet and Merlot. Thus, in 1986, the first vineyard of the estate was established, occupying only 0.3 hectares on rocky soil where olive trees had been grown for over a hundred years. In 1999 and 2004, two additional plots were planted. As a result, the total vineyard area reached 2.1 hectares. Today, the Caberlo grape is grown only at this estate. Vineyard work is done manually, with minimal intervention, without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and all sanitary procedures are natural. Podere Il Carnasciale produces only two wines - the unique, magnificent "Il Caberlo", which is bottled only in magnum bottles of 1.5 liters (no more than 3300 magnums per year) and the second wine "Carnasciale", which is a fine example of a "younger brother" made with the same care as the flagship wine.
