Interesting facts
In Italian, "Sassicaia" means "stony land". The wine gets its name from the stony soils of the vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon. The first "Sassicaia" wine presented on the market was made from the 1968 harvest. The estate`s vineyards, located at an altitude of 80-300 meters above sea level, are influenced by the maritime climate and surrounding hills that protect them from the wind. The soils here are mainly limestone, rich in clay and stones. The exposure is eastern and southeastern. The vines are trained using the "cordone speronato" system. The harvest for the production of "Sassicaia" begins in the first half of September. Over two weeks, alcoholic fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks with a capacity of 35-110 hectoliters at a controlled temperature of 30-31 °C, followed by malolactic fermentation, which lasts until the end of October. The wine is aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. After bottling, the wine is further aged in bottles for six months. Decanting two hours before serving is recommended. The peak maturity of the 2022 vintage is expected between 2025 and 2045.
About the Manufacturer
Tenuta San Guido is one of the most famous Italian wine producers, whose vineyards are located in the Tuscan subregion of Bolgheri. In addition to wines, the estate produces traditional first cold-pressed olive oil and grappa. The estate is owned by the Italian winemaking family Incisa della Rocchetta, who are rightly considered pioneers in the cultivation of Bordeaux grape varieties in Italy and the creation of "Super Tuscan" wines. The Sassicaia vineyards are located at an altitude of 80 meters above sea level. The nearby sea and the hills surrounding the vineyards significantly influence the climate, protecting them from the wind. The vineyards are planted using the "cordone speronato" technique. The yield is about 5,000 kg per hectare.
