Interesting facts
Domaine Jacques Prieur, Musigny Grand Cru is an excellent dry red wine born from the harvest of Grand Cru vineyards in Musigny, the largest terroir in Côte de Nuits, possessing a unique sunny microclimate. The light stony soils not only provide good drainage but also accumulate heat during the day to share it with the vines at night. The plot where Pinot Noir is grown for the production of Musigny Grand Cru covers 0.77 hectares. A distinctive feature of the wine from the grapes grown here is its beautiful floral aroma, notes of ripe fruits in the taste, and impressively long finish. The hand-harvested grapes are sorted and destemmed manually. Fermentation in open wooden vats at controlled temperature lasts 19 days. During the active phase of alcoholic fermentation, the must is stirred twice a day. After the completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 21 months in oak barrels. Musigny Grand Cru is an alluring, elegant wine with a full and complex taste, exquisite aroma, and excellent aging potential of over 20 years. The winter of 2019 was exceptionally mild. From April 1, the first buds began to unfold. Under the influence of cool May temperatures, flowering was delayed and began only in early June, finishing on June 20 during a heatwave. From this period, the vine developed rapidly, but high temperatures during fruit set caused significant symptoms of coulure. At the end of July, a new heatwave provoked veraison. Despite the hot September, the uneven ripening complicated the decision to start harvesting. Considering all elements (plot, vine age, ripeness, etc.), it was decided to start harvesting on September 9, 8-9 days earlier than expected at the end of flowering. The 2019 harvest, heavily affected by the whims of the weather, is characterized by low yields. The Pinot Noir was in excellent sanitary condition, with an ideal balance of sugar and acidity, and excellent ripeness.
About the Manufacturer
The history of Domaine Jacques Prieur, founded in the heart of Meursault, dates back to 1898. "You can never fully own a winery; you can only be a guardian of its values and traditions to pass them on to future generations." This quote is particularly true regarding Jacques Prieur and the history of the Domaine, whose wines and family traditions are a beautiful illustration of Burgundian character. The strength of the Domaine lies in the reunion under one name of the most prestigious terroirs of Burgundy: from Montrachet to Chambertin, as well as Corton, Echezeaux, and Musigny. Domaine Jacques Prieur owns vineyards in 22 appellations, including the most legendary in Côte d'Or. It is the only Domaine in Burgundy that owns vines in each of the five prestigious vineyards: Chambertin, Musigny, Clos Vougeot, Corton-Charlemagne, and Montrachet. This impressive collection is complemented by plots in other Grand Crus in Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Thus, Domaine Jacques Prieur owns some of the brightest jewels in the Burgundian crown! Completely consisting of Grand Cru and Premier Cru (except for Clos de Maizeret in Meursault), the Domaine produces renowned white and red wines. However, even the most delightful terroir is nothing without the experience and passion of the person. From the very beginning, the families responsible for the Domaine have ensured the best care and attention to the vineyards to preserve the soil and create ideal conditions for the vines. All vineyards are cultivated according to the principles of organic farming. Grapes from each plot are vinified separately to preserve all unique characteristics. Today, the Domaine is managed by Jean-Pierre Labruyère and Édouard Labruyère, as well as Martin Prieur. The winemaker of the Domaine is the highly respected Nadine Gublan, who was named "Winemaker of the Year" by "Revue du Vin de France" in 1997.
