Interesting facts
"Vina Tondonia" Reserva is a traditional wine from Rioja of the highest quality, offering elegance rather than intensity or power, which is the aristocratic style of old Rioja. The 2010 vintage demonstrates maturity, concentration, and powerful tannins, yet also surprising refinement. The wine is produced from grapes harvested from the estate's own vineyards, which cover 100 hectares along the bend of the Ebro River. Fermentation of the wine takes place in original oak vats that are now about 140 years old, without temperature control and malolactic fermentation. Then, "Vina Tondonia" Reserva slowly matures in American oak barrels in deep, humid cellars for at least six years. Twice a year, the wine is racked from one barrel to another, discarding the sediment. Before bottling, the wine is clarified with fresh egg whites but is not filtered. The 2010 vintage will reach its peak maturity between 2021 and 2030.
About the Manufacturer
The history of R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia began in the mid-nineteenth century when French merchants visited the Rioja region to find alternative sources of quality grapes for winemaking, as the phylloxera epidemic had destroyed their vineyards. The future founder of the winery — Don Rafael Lopez de Heredia y Landeta, an enthusiastic student who gained knowledge in winemaking — closely observed them. He literally fell in love with this region, especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He noticed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that created the ideal environment for producing wine worthy of worldwide fame. In 1877, Don Rafael began designing and constructing the complex that is now known as the Lopez de Heredia winery. It is the oldest in Haro and one of the first three wine cellars in the Rioja region. For over a century, the family winery R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia has built its philosophy on love and passion for the land and its harvests. The family highly values heritage, which is expressed primarily in the strict quality standards applied in their work and maintained at the highest level. The estate is one of the few family bodegas whose wines are all classified as Rioja DOC.
