Interesting facts
The dry red wine "El Viejo" from the Spanish winery Matsu is the most concentrated and powerful wine in the company's triad. The wine is made from Tempranillo grapes harvested from the oldest vineyards in the Italian region of Toro. Vines over 100 years old (some reaching 130 years) are grown using organic and biodynamic methods and are characterized by low yields. Grapes for "El Viejo" are exclusively hand-picked in the first fifteen days of October and sent to the winery in small boxes. Fermentation in 10,000-liter stainless steel tanks takes place over 3 weeks. The wine is aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. To allow enthusiasts to fully appreciate the characteristics of the wine, "El Viejo" is not filtered or fined before bottling. The 2019 vintage can be enjoyed now or stored until 2029. The wine label features a portrait of an elderly gentleman—the winery owner's grandfather. The name "El Viejo" translates to "the old man" and symbolizes the wisdom contained behind the thin glass of the bottle. The labels of the Matsu wine line feature portraits of the father, grandfather, and grandson. Each photograph of the male winemakers from three different generations conveys the specific character of the particular wine in the series.
About the Manufacturer
Matsu, in Japanese, means "to wait." This is not just a word; it is a concept that best defines the company's philosophy and inspires the winemakers. Respect for nature, the ability to wait for the right moment, and homage to the people who have dedicated their lives to viticulture and winemaking are the fundamental ideas that inspired the winemakers to create the wine collection. In this regard, the bottle labels feature three generations of the estate's winemakers, symbolizing youth, maturity, and wisdom, inherent in each of us at different stages of life. All generations of Matsu winemakers support exclusively organic farming methods and are proud to use only biodynamic viticultural techniques. Before beginning their journey to the consumer, the wines undergo the strictest quality control, guaranteeing the consumer good taste and aroma characteristics.
