Interesting facts
Baron de Chirel Reserva is produced only in the best years and in extremely limited quantities. The first vintage of this wine was released in 1986 and was the result of a successful experiment with grapes from vines over 40 years old. The result was a unique product that marked the beginning of a "new era" for Rioja wines. Since 1995, grape selection has been done on sorting tables. It was Marques de Riscal that first introduced this practice in Spain. The grapes for Baron de Chirel are harvested manually, then carefully sorted on a triage table. Maceration lasts no more than 12 days, and fermentation is carried out at a controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation takes place in large 20-ton oak vats. The wine is aged for 20 months in American oak barriques and for a minimum of 12 months in bottles before release. This powerful and rich wine has an aging potential of 5-8 years.
About the Manufacturer
Marques de Riscal is a flagship of Spanish winemaking. Founded in 1858 on the principle of a Bordeaux chateau, the estate became the first winery in the Rioja region to produce wines based on the experience of Bordeaux winemakers. It was here that Rioja first began aging wines in oak barrels and bottling them directly at the winery. As early as 1895, Marques de Riscal became the first non-French estate to receive an Honorary Diploma of Quality at the Bordeaux wine exhibition, ahead of such renowned chateaux as Latour, Lafite, and Margaux. In 2013, the estate was named the best winery in Europe by the prestigious magazine Wine Enthusiast. According to The Guardian, Marques de Riscal is among the top ten wineries in the world that every wine lover must visit, alongside Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Castello Banfi.
