Interesting facts
Matassa Rouge is a very expressive, juicy, bright wine from the talented winemaker Tom Lubbe, who knows very well how to bring Burgundian elegance to the wines of the south of France. In this wine, he managed to harmoniously combine the power and strength characteristic of red wines from the Pyrenees with excellent mineral freshness and drinkability. The wine is made from Carignan grapes grown on 100-year-old organic vines in the Agly Valley, certified by Ecocert. The poor, dry soils are well suited for viticulture, forcing the roots of the vines to go deep into the soil in search of water. Low rainfall leads to a concentration of aromas in the grapes. The sea breeze helps refresh the vineyards on hot sunny days, while the wind from the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees cools the vineyards at night, ensuring the preservation of natural acidity. The harvest is picked by hand and macerated in whole bunches for 4-8 days. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 16-20 months in 500-liter oak barrels and bottled without filtration. The wine has an aging potential of 10 years; decanting is recommended two hours before serving.
About the Manufacturer
Domaine Matassa is a small estate in the Eastern Pyrenees, owning 15 hectares of vineyards in the village of Calce. The domaine was founded in 2002 by New Zealanders Tom Lubbe, a winemaker who worked for a long time at French and South African wineries, and Sam Harrop, a wine consultant. The winery focused on cultivating indigenous varieties of Northern Catalonia such as Grenache Gris, Macabeu, Lladoner Pelut, Carignan, Muscat of Alexandria and others using organic methods. Biodynamic farming methods have been used in the vineyards since 2003. After harvesting, up to 15 different plants are sown between the rows of vines, which contribute to a greater diversity of soil microbiology. This process gives a natural result of improving the fertility of the grapes and helps to obtain long-lived wines with a unique taste. Work at the winery follows the logic of the vineyards and is aimed at producing natural wines, full of mineral energy and perfectly conveying the characteristics of the terroir.
