Interesting facts
The "Rabaja" Barbaresco Riserva wine is the flagship offering of the Giuseppe Cortese estate, and its quality speaks for itself. The harvest for this wine comes from a plot of just 1 hectare, located on the picturesque hills in the heart of Rabaja. Only the harvests from the best years form the basis for the "Rabaja" Barbaresco Riserva, which is produced in a limited quantity of just 6000 bottles. Compared to classic Barbaresco, the aging of the reserve wine in Slavonian and French oak barrels lasts about 30 months instead of 18, after which the wine spends an additional 10 months in bottles. In 2008, the Nebbiolo harvest was collected from November 18 to 20, which is considered a late harvest, used today more as an exception. The 2008 "Rabaja" Barbaresco Riserva was awarded a gold medal at the "Decanter World Wine Awards" in 2015.
About the Manufacturer
Giuseppe Cortese wines are a dream for every fan of Piedmont wines. Located in the heart of the famous Rabaja area, this small family winery is known for its elegantly balanced wines. It is run by people with deep knowledge of viticulture and winemaking, who respect long-standing traditions and knowledge. A native of Barbaresco, Giuseppe Cortese began his journey working with his father Giacomo in the family wine business. Gaining invaluable experience and realizing the great future of Barbaresco wines, Giuseppe began actively implementing the latest vinification methods, taking over the management of the winery in 1971. He then reconstructed the winery and sought out and acquired new land for vineyards. Gradually, his sons joined him, and now even his granddaughter is involved. The Giuseppe Cortese winery is located in a natural amphitheater formed by two hills — Rabaja and Trifolera, where the vineyards are planted. Nebbiolo vines are planted on the first hill, while Chardonnay, Dolcetto, and Barbera are on the second. The region's climate is an extremely important factor: hot summers and cold winters are optimal for growing Nebbiolo, whose taste varies from year to year depending on the whims of the weather. This variety tends to ripen late in the season and yields the best harvest in a sunny climate at an altitude of 150-400 meters above sea level on the limestone-clay soils of the Barbaresco region, achieving the highest aromatic complexity.
