Interesting facts
Ca Marcanda, "Promis" — a delightful Tuscan wine that beautifully combines the elegance of Merlot and Syrah grapes with the refined strictness of Sangiovese. "Promis" is a trademarked name for the wine produced by the Gaja family. Thus, Gaja decided to denote the fulfillment of promises, hopes ("promis" translates to "promise"). The wine "Promis" is enjoyable to drink young, but it also has great aging potential. The vineyards for the wine are located on lands with a fertile soil composition rich in clay and minerals (type "terre brune"). The local climate with hot summer days, cool nights, and a fresh sea breeze positively affects the quality of the grapes. After harvesting, each variety is fermented separately. Blending occurs after malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 12 months in once-used barriques, followed by further aging in bottles for several months.
About the Manufacturer
The Gaja brand was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, the great-grandfather of the current owner Angelo Gaja, and has been owned by the Gaja family for five generations. Today, Gaja Winery owns vineyards covering a total area of 250 hectares, located in the provinces of Tuscany and Piedmont. Angelo Gaja began his work in the family business in 1961 after completing his education at the Enological Institute of Alba and the University of Montpellier (later he obtained a degree in economics from the University of Turin). Angelo has visited France several times and, inspired by the modern and traditional techniques of French winemakers, began to apply the acquired experience in the production of his own wines. His magnetism, charm, and poetic reflections on the nature of wine make Angelo Gaja one of the most respected and beloved figures in the Italian wine industry. In 2011, Wine Spectator named Angelo Gaja one of the best winemakers in the history of Piedmont and Tuscany.
