About the Manufacturer
The family-owned Seifried winery was established in 1973 in the Moutere Valley. Austrian native Hermann Seifried, along with his wife Agnes, purchased 2 hectares of clay soils in the Nelson region to fulfill Hermann's dream, who had studied in Germany and gained winemaking experience at one of South Africa's largest corporations — KWV. In 1976, the first five varietal wines were produced. At that time, wine was sold directly from the cellar and only by mail order. After some time, the Seifried family acquired two more vineyards located on Rabbit Island and in the Redwood Valley. Today, the company owns 180 hectares of land, where varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling are grown. In 1993, the Seifried family built a restaurant in the middle of the vineyard on Rabbit Island, which soon became a very popular venue for celebrations, weddings, and other events. In 1996, the winery moved here with all its services and offices. Today, 40% of the annual production of Seifried is exported to many countries, 55% is supplied to the local market, and the remaining 5% is sold directly from the cellar.
