Interesting facts
In this beloved corner of Brouilly, old, short, goblet-shaped vines grow on blue-purple layers of manganese-rich soil (Les Roches Bleues) on Mont Brouilly. This wine is made from a small plot of vines in one estate near the summit of a long-extinct volcano, which gave the wine its name, Le Cru du Volcan. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented whole (carbonic maceration) for about a week, and then spend another 2 or 3 days on the skins to preserve many aromatic young fruits while adding a bit of fine tannin. Les Roches Bleues is made from a tiny plot of old Gamay grapes.
About the Manufacturer
Domaine Les Roches Bleues is an estate built on the slopes of Mont Brouilly, carved from the famous blue stone. In 1967, Annie and Louis Bassi acquired 4 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of Mont Brouilly with a strong desire to start their own wine production. This was a bold idea at a time when very few producers owned their own vines. From the very beginning, they planned to sell their wines directly to their customers, aiming to increase the number of loyal and satisfied customers of the estate. Then in 1993, management passed to Christian and Dominique, who treated the vines like a garden, paying special attention to detail and respect for soil conditions to highlight the character of the area. Gradually, the wines were exported to the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Northern Europe, and Africa. Wine tourism was developed: groups of visitors were welcomed, wine club partners were entertained, and wine tasting lessons were offered to make people more aware and appreciative of the Beaujolais region, its festive atmosphere, its wines, and, in particular, the quality products of their vineyard. The winery celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. In 2019, the third generation took over when Jonathan and Chloe came into ownership to maintain the reputation of Les Roches Bleues and continue to offer wines of exceptional quality.
