Interesting facts

"Decordi" is a line of still and sparkling wines that fully expresses the character and potential of 9 Italian wine regions. The wines offer excellent quality at an affordable price. The line is named after the founders of the winery—the Decordi family. "Decordi" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a dry red wine made from the Montepulciano grape variety, which grows on the estate's vineyards in the Abruzzo region. There are various versions regarding the history of this grape's origin: according to one, it was imported by a traveler who brought the grapes from Tuscany to Abruzzo in the 19th century; according to others, it was originally grown in the Peligna Valley, in the province of L'Aquila. These different versions intertwine with a legend: the Greco-Roman historian Polybius said that Hannibal made his soldiers drink Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, and it seemed to cure them of scabies. Montepulciano is also mentioned in Ovid's "Metamorphoses." The harvest is carried out when the berries reach optimal ripeness. After harvesting, the berries undergo traditional vinification under strict temperature control in neutral tanks. In these same tanks, the wine is aged for several months. "Decordi" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo pairs excellently with pasta and tomato-based dishes, pizza, fried or grilled meat, mushroom risotto, cheeses, and appetizers.

About the Manufacturer

The Decordi winery traces its history back to 1921, when the family owned a small café serving traditional Italian dishes and wines of their own production. In those years, Decordi produced large quantities of red wines based on Lambrusco, Fortana, and Ancellotta varieties. The wines were so popular with patrons that the family council decided to take winemaking seriously. Thus, in 1925, the foundation was laid for the future winery, which has now existed for 80 years. It was in the 1920s that vineyard cultivation began, and the first wine blends were created, sold both in bulk and in bottles. The Decordi winery was officially registered in 1937, and by 1950, the construction of a plant with an annual production volume of 3 million liters was completed. Most of the products at that time were sold in large bottles and demijohns. By 1964, production volume had increased further, and the winery's market expanded to the neighboring provinces of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. In the 1970s, Decordi introduced a new line of wines specifically for the country's restaurant industry. High consumer demand enabled technological upgrades and modernization of equipment, also helping the company reach a new level—in the 1980s, the winery began exporting its wines to Europe and America, and in the 1990s to Japan. Since 2005, Vinicola Decordi has been led by a representative of the fourth generation of the family, Alessandro Decordi, whose efforts are focused on both production development and further conquering the global market.
