The Back family's story began in the early 20th century in South Africa when C.L. Back arrived in Cape Town as a political and religious refugee from Lithuania. After finishing work as a port worker, C.L. became a bicycle delivery boy. This continued until he saved enough money to buy a butcher shop in Paarl. As legend has it, a man approached him in the shop and asked if he was interested in buying a farm. This led to C.L. selling his butcher shop and buying Klein Babylonstoren farm in 1916. Celebrating four generations of family ownership and over 100 years of quality winemaking, Backsberg Estate Cellars continues to thrive, respecting its past while simultaneously moving forward with promising holistic practices. Awards and certificates: - Backsberg has received many notable accolades for its hard work, especially for social responsibility and community work. - In 2006, Backsberg was recognized as the first Carbon-Neutral winery in South Africa, becoming one of three in the world. - In 2015, Michael Back, our third-generation owner, received the award for his lifetime achievements in the alcohol business for his ongoing contribution to the environment, sustainability, ethical practices, and education. - Backsberg has BWI, WIETA, and IPW certificates. In other words, if we can't do it right in the vineyards, then we can't do it in the cellars either. Every bottle of wine includes the rich and lively fruits of our Paarl region, and we produce wines with harmonious flavors and a high level of drinkability. Winemaker Alicia Rechner makes decisions while the grapes are still on the vine, deciding when to harvest and how to handle the grapes. Thus, she is able to ensure the creation of impeccable wines.
