Interesting facts
The wine "Varvara" is named after Baroness Varvara Wrangel, the wife of Count Ugolino della Gerardesca, grandmother of Countess Franca Spalletti Trivelli. First released in 2005, the wine was the result of the winemakers' desire to produce a more straightforward wine with a fruity inclination. It was referred to as the estate's "younger" wine, which aims for breadth. However, starting with the 2008 vintage, many experts agree that it has ceased to be the "second" wine. Of course, it has a less robust tannin structure than the flagship wine "Castello di Bolgheri", but already now "Varvara" can be called a great wine — expressive, uncompromising, and not following the trends of wine fashion. Hand-harvested grapes are destemmed. The grapes are then gently pressed. Fermentation in contact with the skins takes place in steel tanks and lasts 20-25 days. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels of 500 liters and 35 hectoliters, the 2022 vintage wine will be at its peak perfection until 2029.
About the Manufacturer
The history of the Castello di Bolgheri dates back to around 1500, although some studies indicate the 13th century. It was owned by the counts of Gerardesca. In the second half of the 18th century, the building was restored and reconstructed, and cellars were built. In 1895, the castle's facade was changed, adding crenellated towers that have survived to this day. Later, the castle and the surrounding lands were inherited from Countess Franca Spalletti Trivelli-Gerardesca by the family of Count Zileri dal Verme. The farm owned by Castello di Bolgheri extends over 130 hectares around the castle, of which 50 hectares are covered by vineyards, while the rest is allocated for olive groves, various crops, and forests. On both sides of the farm stretches the famous cypress alley, which was praised in his works by Giosuè Carducci — the Italian poet of the 19th century and Nobel laureate. Since 1997, the vineyards of Castello di Bolgheri have been planted with the main varieties specified for Bolgheri DOC wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. The agronomist and enologist of the farm are Clemente and Federico Zileri dal Verme.
