"R" de Rieussec is a complex and refreshing white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, created with special attention to detail under the supervision of the Rothschild family, combining sophistication and easy drinkability. The 2017 vintage is an undoubted favorite of wine critics. James Suckling spoke enthusiastically about this wine in his review, calling it "exciting, very powerful and rich, with depth and intensity." Robert Parker compared the cuvée to the greatness of "La Vieille d`Or". The wine has been produced for over 30 years from the same vineyards as the world-famous Sauternes Château Rieussec. The location and the ideal combination of gravel, limestone, sandy and clayey soils give birth to a wine that will bring pleasure not only in its youth, but also after many years of storage.
About the Manufacturer
Today, the vineyards of Chateau Rieussec occupy one of the highest points in Sauternes, bordering Yquem to the east, and cover 90 of the 130 hectares of the total area of Chateau Rieussec. The soils are predominantly gravel mixed with limestone. The vines average 25 years old, 90% of the land is given to Sémillon, 7% to Sauvignon Blanc and 3% to Muscadelle. At the winery, completely restored by Rothschild in 1989, pneumatic presses are installed to help with careful fruit processing. Small barrels are used in winemaking so that each vintage can be individually managed and evaluated. Before aging, the wines undergo strict selection; those selected as "Grand Vin" mature for up to 26 months in oak barrels, of which approximately half are renewed each year. If the quality is not up to standard, the wine is classified as a second wine — "Carmes de Rieussec", named after the first owners — the Carmelite monks of Langon. The Château also produces wines "Clos Laber" and "Château de Cos", as well as a dry white wine "R" de Rieussec. In total, the Château produces about 10,000 bottles of wine depending on the vintage.
