Interesting facts
The legendary wine of Nicolas Joly — "Clos de la Coulee de Serrant" is made from Chenin Blanc grapes. The Coulee de Serrant vineyard, where the grapes for this wine are grown, has an area of about 7 hectares and is rightfully considered one of the greatest in France. It was planted in the 12th century by Cistercian monks. The vineyard, with a southern and south-eastern exposure, is located on steep slopes of the Loire River, which is why it is cultivated either by hand or with the help of horses. The soils of this area are mainly composed of slate and quartz. The average age of the vines is about 40 years, and the age of the oldest vines is more than 80 years. The production of "Clos de la Coulee de Serrant", like all Nicolas Joly wines, is based on the principle of minimal intervention. The fermentation process takes place on natural yeasts, and temperature control during fermentation is absent. In addition, the wine is not filtered or stabilized. The drink is aged for 8 months in egg-shaped oak barrels. Nicolas Joly recommends decanting "Clos de la Coulee de Serrant" before serving a day before serving at a temperature of 12 °C. In addition, Joly notes that an open wine will improve its characteristics and reach its peak on the 3-5th day after opening.
About the Manufacturer
Coulee de Serrant is one of the three wineries in France, along with Romanée-Conti and Chateau Grillet, that has its own appellation. The history of this estate is unique. The vineyards were planted in the 12th century by Cistercian monks. In 1962, the vineyards were bought by the Joly family. After several years of work, Nicolas Joly realized that the vineyard was producing poor results and began to look for new approaches to winemaking. In 1980, he came across a book by the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, which proposed a holistic approach to agriculture. From 1980, Nicolas Joly began to apply these biodynamic principles on some parts of the vineyard, and the results pleased him. Since 1984, the estate has completely switched to biodynamic winemaking, and in 1985 Nicolas Joly received the appropriate certificates. The cultivation of vines excludes the use of chemical products and insecticides. Animal compost is used to feed the vines. Coulee de Serrant is one of the largest wine estates in the Loire Valley. The estate produces three rare French wines: "La Coulée de Serrant", "Les Vieux Clos" and "Clos de la Bergerie". They all fully justify Nicolas Joly's vision: "Wine should be not only good for tasting, but above all, truthful. That is, one that reflects the subtleties of the terroir."
