Interesting facts
At Château Guiraud, 100 hectares of vineyards are used, including 10 hectares in the Bordeaux white appellation for the production of this Grand Vin Sec wine. The soil of Château Guiraud consists of 80% sandy gravel and 20% clayey gravel. The subsoil mainly consists of deep sands, pure gravel, interspersed with masses of red clay, limestone marl, strips of oyster limestone, and red and white clay. Two grape varieties are used in this wine: Sauvignon Blanc (about 70%) and Semillon (30%). Grand Vin Blanc Sec de Château Guiraud is produced from selected batches of characteristic vineyard plots with fine sandy and clayey gravel. Hand-harvested at full ripeness, its fruits are generously aromatic.
About the Manufacturer
In 1766, the noble nest of the Mons family, known as "Maison noble du Bayle", was acquired by a Bordeaux merchant named Pierre Giro. The estate attracted the merchant's attention, particularly due to its winemaking past. Pierre Giro decided to continue the tradition of producing local wines, not forgetting to give the estate a new name — Chateau Giro. Over the next century, Pierre Giro and his son Louis worked on developing and enhancing their holdings, acting as prudent and foresighted owners. However, Pierre Giro's grandson, Pierre-Aman, did not fare as well, and in 1846 the chateau had to be sold. From that time and for the next 160 years, the estate changed many owners, without losing its name, and continued to produce excellent wines. Thus, the name Chateau entered history as early as 1855 when its wines were granted the status of Premier Grand Cru Sauternes (Premier Grand Cru de Sauternes). The current owners of Chateau Guiraud, covering a total area of 128 hectares, are leading wine connoisseurs and businessmen — entrepreneur Robert Peugeot, Olivier Bernard — owner of Domaine de Chevalier, Stefan von Neipperg — owner of Chateau Canon la Gaffeliere, and Xavier Planty — estate manager. Wines under the "Chateau Giro" brand are produced with respect for Bordeaux traditions and innovative methods. For example, the estate has adopted the selection of vines from which the best wines of the Chateau have already been produced. The cuttings are not cloned, but their harvest is used to create new blends.
