Interesting facts

The wine "Mongrana" is the quintessence of the colors, sounds, and rich history of the Maremma region. The character and name "Mongrana" are borrowed from a noble family of fearless knights from the Renaissance era, mentioned by Ludovico Ariosto in the epic poem "Orlando Furioso". "Mongrana" has been recognized as one of the "100 Best Wines in the World" by Wine Spectator. The blend of "Mongrana" consists of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot grapes grown in biodynamic vineyards in the Maremma region. The harvest is hand-picked into small boxes. At the winery, fermentation occurs in cement tanks. After malolactic fermentation, part of the wine is aged in oak barrels, while the other part is aged in cement tanks for 10 months. "Mongrana" is produced without the use of animal products or by-products, making it suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

About the Manufacturer

The Querciabella winery was founded in Chianti Classico in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, who previously manufactured and sold steel in Mexico and made a fortune from it. After some time, he decided to return to Italy and fulfill his long-held dream of producing high-quality wines. Year after year, Giuseppe acquired land, developed his own vineyards, built a winery and new cellars. As the estate developed, the quality of the wines improved, receiving increasingly high ratings and positive reviews from experts year after year. Thanks to Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella became one of the leading estates in Tuscany. Today, the Querciabella estate is managed by Giuseppe's son, Sebastiano, who continues his father's traditions. He invests significant resources and efforts into improving wine production to enhance their quality, while clearly understanding that innovative ideas and modern equipment have always been and will always be secondary to the gifts of nature. The estate's philosophy is to create high-quality wines that reflect the richness of the terroir. Since the late 1990s, the Querciabella estate has employed only biodynamic methods of grape cultivation, which positively affect the harmony of the land and the wines produced. Sebastiano Castiglioni fully controls the wine production process: from planting the vines to selecting the material for barrels. Interestingly, Querciabella is the second estate in Chianti Classico to introduce the practice of aging wines in oak barrels.
