Interesting facts

Clos de Vougeot — a remarkable wine from Domaine Meo-Camuzet, produced from selected grapes grown on the eponymous Grand Cru vineyard. The vineyard was named after the Vouge River, which separates the villages of Vougeot and Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard covers a total area of 50.6 hectares and is the largest Grand Cru vineyard in Côte de Nuits. The plot owned by Domaine Meo-Camuzet spans 3 hectares, located at the very top of the appellation. The vines, planted in 1920, occupy one-third of the plot, another third is occupied by vines planted in 1960, and the remaining vines are 20-30 years old. Clos Vougeot is always a mature wine with an elegant structure. For wine production, selected grapes are placed in vats, where they remain for 3-5 days, macerating in their own juice at a temperature of 15 °C, followed by a natural fermentation process that occurs in cement containers at a temperature of 34-35 °C and lasts for 2-3 weeks. The wine is aged in new barrels, predominantly made from Tronçais oak. This delightful wine is characterized by elegance, lace-like texture, and beautiful length. It can be enjoyed young, as it quickly expresses the vintage characteristics and complexity inherent in Grand Cru wines, but it can also surprise with its longevity and beautiful depth that develops with age.

About the Manufacturer

Domaine Meo-Camuzet was founded in the early 20th century when Étienne Camuzet, a member of the French Parliament from Côte-d'Or from 1902 to 1932, began selecting vineyards whose location and reputation particularly interested him. Thus, the most exceptional vineyards of Burgundy were chosen, especially in Clos de Vougeot. The plots he acquired have some of the best locations in the appellation. Étienne's daughter, Marie Nuaud, inherited the vineyards, but since Marie had no children of her own, after her death in 1959, the estate passed to Jean Meo, who was then working in General de Gaulle's headquarters. Marie and Jean were not close, but the two families had close ties, so Marie's wish for the continuation of the estate was fulfilled. During this period, the vineyards were rented out, and part of the harvest was shared between the owner and the tenants. Jean Meo sold his share of the wine to local wine merchants. Such arrangements allowed him to continue his Parisian career while overseeing the Burgundy estate. In 1985, the estate began selling wines under its own label directly from the cellars. After 1988, rental contracts began to gradually expire (15 acres were directly used by the estate, while the remaining 13.5 acres remained under lease). Thus, the harvest from all appellations was already vinified by the estate. Later, Jean Meo's son, Jean-Nicolas Meo, took over the estate. Today he is responsible for technical and administrative matters. His assistants are winemaker Henri Jayer and Christian Fourna, vineyard manager. The main goal of Domaine Meo-Camuzet is to produce structured and refined wines with good concentration and charm. Various methods help achieve this goal — special grape growing technologies maintain natural balance, revealing the characteristics of the terroir; hand harvesting, sorting berries before vinification — all of this allows preserving the characteristics of the grapes. The wines are aged in barrels, most of which are new. Bottling is done by gravity without prior filtration. Each of these stages — from vineyard to bottling plays an important role in creating truly great wines.
