Interesting facts
Côte d’Or, known as the "Golden Slope," is one of the departments of the commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges, located in Burgundy. Among Burgundy wine enthusiasts, the Côte de Nuits area is well known, situated in the northern part of Côte d’Or. This strip of hills, 20 kilometers long and no more than 300 meters wide, lies south of Dijon and is famous for its great wines with particularly complex and multifaceted structures. The elegant dry red wine Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, Echezeaux Grand Cru AOC is produced from Pinot Noir grapes grown on one of the largest Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, covering an area of 36 hectares. The plot owned by Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret occupies just over 1 hectare. Echezeaux is located on hilly lands in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux and borders the Premier Cru Vosne and Vosne-Romanée. The soils here are rich in clay and limestone. The age of the vines ranges from 25 to 60 years. The vines are cultivated using the Guyot system, with leaf thinning and "green" harvesting. Organic practices are adhered to in both the vineyard and cellar. The harvest is hand-picked when the grapes reach optimal ripeness. The harvested grapes are carefully sorted and partially or fully destemmed depending on the quality of the grapes. A light cold maceration lasting 4 to 5 days allows for the extraction of coloring and tannin compounds. Alcoholic fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 30 °C for 12-15 days. This process is accompanied by daily punching down. Vincent Mongeard practices moderate and rational sulfiting, which is necessary as sulfur dioxide is a natural antiseptic that helps neutralize bacterial growth. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in Allier and Nivernais oak barrels, 60-80% of which are new, for 18-22 months. Air-dried wood imparts roundness and softness to the wine as it ages. Weekly topping up and periodic racking are performed throughout the first year of aging. The wine is bottled without prior filtration and spends a long time in the winery's cellars. Over time, a small sediment may form, which will not affect the quality of the wine but will be a guarantee of authenticity and respect for the terroir.
About the Manufacturer
The Mongeard family settled in Vosne-Romanée in the 18th century. Local archives mention that in 1786, members of the Mongeard family worked at the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti winery. The lives of many generations of this family have been closely tied to viticulture and winemaking. One of the last owners of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret was Jean Mongeard (his mother's maiden name was Mugneret). As a child, Jean lost his father and took over the management of the winery at the age of 16. Since 1975, Jean Mongeard worked with his son Vincent, who was responsible for the vineyards and controlled the vinification process of all wines produced. He convinced his father to resume traditional bottling without prior filtration, reserving it only for certain labels. Jean is one of the most renowned producers in Vosne-Romanée and a prominent figure among Burgundy winemakers. As president of the Côte d'Or Winemakers Association, he fully handed over the management of the Domaine to his son in 1985 and retired ten years later. Currently, the estate's vineyards, which include parts of the famous Grand Cru sites "Clos de Vougeot" and "Richebourg," cover more than 33 hectares. The excellent Pinot Noir vines are 45-50 years old and, with careful management, yield only 39 hectoliters per hectare. Vincent Mongeard advocates traditional winemaking methods and uses only the best wood in wine production. Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is well-known among Burgundy wine enthusiasts for its wide and consistently high-quality range of elegant wines with rich aromas and exquisite flavors.
