Interesting facts
"Kaapse Vonkel" Brut is an elegant sparkling wine with a refined aroma and delicate bubbles, capable of enhancing any celebration! The founder of "Simonsig", Frans Malan, was the first producer in South Africa to release sparkling wine made using the Champagne method. This happened in 1971. "Kaapse Vonkel" became the first wine whose blend consists of all three classic champagne grape varieties — Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. The grapes for the wine are hand-harvested and carefully pressed whole bunches in pneumatic presses. Only the first pressing juice is used for the wine. The obtained juice is allowed to settle for 2 days, after which it is fermented at a temperature of 15-17 °C with specially selected yeast strains. Part of the Chardonnay is fermented in old French oak barrels to add greater complexity to the wine's flavor. Malolactic fermentation is not allowed (to preserve the wine's freshness). After fermentation, the wine is aged in bottles on the lees for at least 20 months. The brut can be enjoyed young, but it has aging potential and can develop richness and complexity over 4-6 years. "Kaapse Vonkel" Brut has won numerous prestigious awards at various international competitions.
About the Manufacturer
Simonsig is an estate in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, founded by Frans Malan in 1968. Over 55 years, the Malan family has cultivated 300 hectares of vineyards at the foot of the Simonsberg mountain range. The winemakers have become pioneers in South Africa — they created sparkling wine using the champagne method and the Cap Classique category, began blending French varieties, and created the “Cape blend,” elevating Chenin Blanc vinification to the level of top French white wines. Wines from Stellenbosch are considered the most valuable in South Africa, partly thanks to Simonsig, which has received high ratings from the national guide Platter’s Wine Guide, as well as international recognition from Tim Atkin, Wine Enthusiast, and others.
