Interesting facts

Pieve Santa Restituta, Brunello di Montalcino — a juicy, appealing wine with a rich fruity taste and expressive aroma. In 1994, Angelo Gaja acquired an estate in Tuscany called Pieve Santa Restituta, near the province of Montalcino. The estate has a history dating back to the 7th century AD and is named after the parish church of Santa Restituta (pieve translates to church in Italian). The parish is a unique monument of medieval Christian architecture and art. The estate grows the traditional grape variety for the region, Sangiovese — the basis for Brunello di Montalcino. The vines are about 24 years old. The grapes for the 2016 vintage were harvested from several vineyards. The berries from each plot undergo maceration and fermentation separately in stainless steel containers for 3 weeks. After malolactic fermentation, a blend is created for further aging, which is placed in oak barrels for 24 months and then aged for another year in concrete tanks. The first release of Brunello di Montalcino took place in 2005.

About the Manufacturer

The Gaja brand was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, the great-grandfather of the current owner Angelo Gaja, and has been owned by the Gaja family for five generations. Today, Gaja Winery owns vineyards covering a total area of 250 hectares, located in the provinces of Tuscany and Piedmont. Angelo Gaja began his work in the family business in 1961 after completing his education at the Enological Institute of Alba and the University of Montpellier (later he obtained a degree in economics from the University of Turin). Angelo has visited France several times and, inspired by the modern and traditional techniques of French winemakers, began to apply the acquired experience in the production of his own wines. His magnetism, charm, and poetic reflections on the nature of wine make Angelo Gaja one of the most respected and beloved figures in the Italian wine industry. In 2011, Wine Spectator named Angelo Gaja one of the best winemakers in the history of Piedmont and Tuscany.
