Interesting facts
Pommard by Joseph Drouhin is a great Burgundy wine, confirming its high reputation. Pommard is a very famous village located a short distance south of Beaune. Viticulture has been practiced here for a long time. It is known that over 2000 years ago, the Gauls chose this area for growing Pinot Noir grapes. A temple dedicated to the Celtic goddess Pomona was built here, possibly giving the village its name. The vineyard soil consists of clay and limestone. The rather high density of vine planting—10,000 plants per hectare, as well as low yields (44 hl/ha), are designed to extract as much as possible from the terroir and reveal all its nuances. During the production of Pommard wine, maceration and fermentation are carried out for 2-3 weeks with regular punch-downs and a single racking of the must the day before the end of fermentation. This stage is very important for extracting color and flavor, but should never compromise the refinement and typical character of the wine, so Drouhin carefully controls these processes. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new, for 14-18 months. The wine has an aging potential of 10-15 years.
About the Manufacturer
The Joseph Drouhin winery was founded in 1880 in Beaune. Today, it is a family enterprise with long-standing traditions and a century-long history that has gone through many stages of development. Robert Drouhin made the main contribution to the company's development. Starting in 1957, he expanded the holdings, buying vineyards in regions where there was real potential. Large sums were always invested in acquiring vineyards, but the winery's pride is the "Clos de Mouches" vineyard in the vicinity of Beaune. To maintain high quality, yields are deliberately reduced by an average of 20% of the legally permitted amount. Another key principle the company has adhered to since the late 1960s is exclusively biodynamic and biological methods of vineyard management, excluding the use of various pesticides and chemicals. Today, Joseph Drouhin's holdings include over 75 hectares of vineyards and are considered the largest in the region. The wines of this producer are rightfully recognized as unique, intense, and delicate; their taste unfolds slowly, conveying all the bright colors and aroma of the berries. A distinctive feature of the refined and sophisticated wines is an astonishing purity of taste, providing an infinitely long pleasure.
